Anybody have more information on the hybrid x-fire? Specifically, using this with a 3870? If you already have a 3870 and nobody would buy it from you because it has little value, then why not just CF, get a few extra frames?

I'm a bit disappointed that all 8 cards at NewEgg today are exactly reference designs with stickers applied for company logos. Honestly, how hard is it to plop your own cooler on to a known PCB design? :| Oh well.

Yes, you can CrossFire these with 3800 series cards.

How much does a 3870 fetch used nowadays anyway? I know the resale value for a 8800GTS 320MB is abysmmal (~$80)

Good to know, because just my 9800GTX makes the whole room heat up on some nights if I've done enough gaming. I think I will invest in aftermarket cooling as well when it comes out.

But what about release dates. Is it officially June 25th for the HD4870? I've read mixed reports.

I'm hoping I can order one of these things next week if they beat the GTX260 hard enough.

The cooler on the 9800 GTX is very good. Fanspeed is dynamically controlled better than most cards I've had. Spins up, spins down. It's not the quietest cooler, but it works well. I'd not bother with an aftermarket. The card will kick out the same heat regardless of cooler.

Anandtech 4850 review say July 8th on 4870 release date..

Aww... July 8th????? That's soooooo long !!!!!!!!! My step up expires before then too so I hope I get to see benchmarks before then so I can decide... I was hoping it was next week.

Do you know if they are at least going to launch with 1GB of RAM or with 512MB?

Also, I guess it is a good cooler compared to other cards in its league, but I'm just not used to having my cards idle at 62C.

Considering you can get them brand new for $130 or less...

This is a very impressive feat from AMD. Seeing it beating G80/G92 quite handily, NV will have a hard time countering it. I know people complain about the price of GTX 280, but I'm thinking that NV couldn't price it lower due to the cost. (GT200 is huge and expensive) If NV were to lower the price of GTX 260 to compete against RV770, that would means a lot of wasted GT200 dies so I doubt they will go that route.

That leaves G92b (55nm G92) to compete, which means NV has to achieve it by clock speed. Unfortunately G92 architecture has a severe defect with memory performance. Heck, seeing how HD 4850 performing even G80 doesn't look too efficient memory-wise. RV770 looks to have more clock speed headroom as well, considering the HD 4850 is a single-slot design.

Very exciting situation in such a long time.

They always push the reference design cards out the door first, you will see custom cooler arrive in the next few weeks- the mounting holes are the same so you could buy one and put you're own Thermaltake Duorb or something on them, I know as soon as I get one (maybe two ) I'll be putting it under water.

@op 4850 xfire should be = gtx 280 when you factor in the games that DON'T scale very well. in games that do scale, it should be quite a bit faster. check out your favorites and see how they do in xfire, if they all scale well then you'll be gtg. what mobo do you have btw?

My mobo is rampage formula as in the sig Although I brought the OC down to 3.2GHz due to temp problems. I am so noob @ Ocing , I can only get it stable if my ram is @ 1068...

but anyway I digress.

Didnt know WoW is CPU limited. Does this mean I would have to get Q9xxx or better? I play WoW a lot now, some AoC and RTSs in my spare time. What can I say, I like the eye candy

call it a hunch.... but i think the one labeled as 4850 is the 4850

Laugh all you want, but when I replied there was no way to denote which score belonged to which card.

Good to see the 4850 still spanks the pseudo-9800GTX+, and will still be cheaper.

Gotta account for the magic drivers still.[probably reduced IQ...]

LMAO so correct

I am glad that ATOT isnt fooled by the low blows that Nvidia constantly deals, its not that I am PRO AMD, I couldnt care less which company goes agaisnt them, I just want them to go down because of their stupid "our costumers are so dumb they will believe us anyway" tactics

Isn't that all three companies?

Wrong. The GTX+ is a die shrink

WOW!!! Excellent card and for $199!!! :Q

For the record guys, Wreckage is the king of nVidiots in AT forums. Watching AMD kick nVidia in the butt is his worst nightmare.

I think the AT review pretty effectively demonstrates why CF costs less than a GTX280-
they got no/very poor scaling in 3 of 7 games tested.

When you throw microstutter, mouse lag, and other multi card issues into the mix, it becomes apparent that the 4850s are priced appropriately.

That said, I think the 4850 looks to be a very solid performer at it's price point as a single card, and in some games transcends it's price point in CF.

Does not seem to do so well in Crisis and there appears to be some scaling issues with Crossfire as 8800GT SLI is beating it.

Well, Nvidia has had a while now to work on 8800GT SLI scaling, AMD hasn't had so much time to work on 4850 Crossfire scaling. Even Nvidia's own 8800GT in SLI makes the GTX260 (and often the 280) seem like a pretty bad purchase.

What were the AA/AF settings for the tests? I don't seem to see it anywhere.

The 4850's seems to trade blows with the 9800GTX until AA is cranked up where it starts to pull past.
