Good supersampling AA performance would tempt me. I hate those jaggy shader and texture edges

What is a hard launch? Does that mean the cards will be in stores without much delay?

it means the cards at the retailers and waiting for official launch/nda lift.

I'm waiting for the 5870/50 to come out and cause the prices on the "old" cards to go down. I'll probably end up getting either a 4870 or a 5770 within the next couple of months.

Agreed. Plus I'd like to see the new AF from AMD. It's been a nagging issue with the HD 4000 series that causes shimmering on certain games/textures. (Disclaimer: I know there are many who don't see this but unfortunately my eyes have grown to detect it, so it matters to me)

the old ATI cards are already cheap and will likely stay right where they are on price until they are sold out.

yeah, it's hard to believe that a 4850 will go much lower than $95 regardless of how well the $299 5850 performs...

Assuming these new chips are as competitive as the early rumor graphs, ATI has the market wrapped up on price points until Nvidia can get a new chip on out. Nv can't do much maneuvering on price since g200 is xboxhugelol and any price cuts they make can easily be matched by ATI. Just before the holiday season and when the economy is starting to look better, too. Wonder if Nvidia would drop GTX 260s and 275s in addition to the high-end parts just so they can move inventory? If GTX 275 hit ~$150-175 or 260 hit $100 before Xmas I'd pick one up in a heartbeat, screw the new chips.

G300 better get here quick and be good to boot or a lot of people are going to be buying ATI.

Have you seen the picture of the 5870? You could land jets on that thing, lol. All these recent/new cards are too huge. Hopefully soon they'll get back down to a more compact size.

I actually meant the die size of the chip, not the cards themselves. Nvidia can't get as many chips off the 300mm wafers which cuts into profits and at the same price point that makes for even slimmer margins blah blah.

But yeah, I'm not fond of all these big cards either. I can't use some of my HDD bays, I need a bigger PSU for SLI/Xfire. Bleh.

Luckily for me I have a coolermaster 840 case so I don't care how big the 5870 is. When can we buy one, anyone know? It seems like a pretty good price. I would pay msrp but not a dime over. Its 399 right?

Are they changing the AF? I read it was the same as r600/r700. Would be nice if they did though.

Yeah apparently it's better than nV's now.

That would be very interesting. I read that they were improving their AF but I never read that it would be better than Nvidia's. Hopefully a review will do a comparison.

any word on where we can buy 2GB models? im planning on buying 2, or a 5870x2+5870, by black friday, and if frys doesnt have them in stock tomorrow im gonna have to start hunting lol. gonna probably get an XFX model for the double lifetime warranty, but my trusty old sapphire lineup (9800PRO, x1650PRO AGP, 2900PRO, 4670 512mb) has done well so far, and after they pulled out the 4850x2 i wouldnt be surprised if they are the only manufacturer for a while with something nuts like a 4GB 5870 and an 8GB 5870x2. with eyefinity though, it may even make sense depending on how the benchmarks perform:shocked:

lmao look at my pic vs yours. that one has the card cut off by like 1/3rd of its length. its literally twice as long as the 5870x2! ITS BADASS. the thing's a fucking landing strip. i wonder how a card like that would have performed back then if they could have actually got it to work lmao.

the only practicality to a realistic card like that wouldn't have been for speed, it would have been for versatility in choosing the chip that performed best for a particular game
