Actually the 128MB version seems to be slightly cheaper as seen here. Just an FYI. Oh, and don't forget your freebie add-in from Newegg too!

Ahhhh...I found the difference. The 128mb is the retail version for $103 and the 256mb is bulk at $103.

i've been wanting to get this card because it uses passive cooling, nice for a quietpc... but i'm still using my Radeon 8500
and it plays the main game I play most of the time (MOHAA) just fine at highest settings... but the 8500 uses a fan... still debating whether I should upgrade or not or slap a passive cooling unit onto my 8500... decisions decisions...

Come off it, then fan on the 8500 is tiny - smaller than a 486 fan, your hard drive would make more noise!

i tested this a while back to see if it would make a difference w/o fan by unplugging it for a 5 mins, and it made a noticeable difference in overall system noise. my hard drives don't make much noise at all because i have acoustic management enabled, and I only have one exhaust fan on. The fan on the 8500 could be needing some oil, maybe it got louder over time and a brand new one is probably hard to hear, but not the one I have, although it's not THAT loud. My CPU fan is probably still the noisiest part in the case. I'll probably end up sticking a larger passive cooling unit on the 8500 and run it w/o fan since a number of people have been doing that with good results.

If that fan is the same one I got on my 8500 aiw, there must be a mechanical problem. That fan must has to be the quiet piece in my system that spins.

heh I'd pass on this card at $103...I love ATI but this card isn't a very good value...

Ti4200 would whomp it in all except the obvious dx9 games. But since this card would run dx9 games like crap too, I don't think it's a major issue =p

Doesn't the ATI 9600 128mb model run the gpu and the memory a little faster than the 256MB version of the card?

Read the reviews on newegg... someone on there put a similar comment.

Just wondering.

Sweetness,
Mer.

Twice the performance!
And half the calories too.

Question: I just picked up a ATI 9800 PRO 128mb card and haven't opened it yet. It replaced a 9500PRO that I just sold and believe it or not, I ended up not paying much more for my 9800PRO than what I sold my 9500PRO for. Anyway.. I also have a GF4 Ti4200 64 mb card that I have overclocked to near Ti4600 speeds. It seems to work fine with just about any of the games that I have to throw at it. What would you do? Keep the 9800PRO or sell it and wait for the next generation cards?

TIA,

Sal

I replaced my OC'd ti4200 64mb card (great little card) with a 9800 Pro 128mb. Currently, it's at standard clock speed. YMMV, but I had BF1942 and "medium" setting with the ti4200, but can go to "high" with the 9800. UT2004 demo plays without a hitch at the highest settings with the 9800 (didn't try it with the ti4200). I'm happy with the 9800, and I'll probably be set for 1 - 2 yrs for a video card, where the I think the ti4200 would run out of steam with some the forthcoming releases. The one thing the ti4200 seems to a bit better is dual monitoring CRTs. The 9800 is a bit flakey about this at times.

I guess if I look at it that way.. When the next generation cards come out, I probably wouldn't want to buy right away anyway because the prices will be high. That would mean that I'd probably have to suffer along with my GF4 Ti4200 longer than I would want to. Considering the price that I paid for the card and the difference between the price over the used 9500PRO (less than $50 difference), I think I should probably just keep the 9800 PRO.

Thanks for your input.

Would the 128MB version be a better value/performer? Sorry, hella out of it in terms of video cars since I haven't been gaming for quite some time. Planning on getting back into it once I'm done with classes. Since my old ATI Radeon VIVO 64MB DDR is dying I'm looking into getting a new card to last me over the next two years. Not looking for the ultimate in gaming performance, just something that will allow me to play games and newer games at a decent framerate.

Much thanks for any advice.

woohoo, just grabbed a refurbed sapphire 9600 with 256mb ram for $75 +tax
They had a connect3d 9600se 128mb for $57 or so, but I decided against the SE model.
Both are fanless which will go great with my shuttle box
