You're a rare case I didn't lose any fps in the stress test, it was the same, but in actual gameplay I gained 10-20 fps , like in CS : S with AA/AF at 6x/16x, I got 60-70 fps, but with the new drivers I am getting a steady 90+, and in HF2 I gained the same amount of fps and in far cry I got an ok 5-10 boost.

The drivers work fine and are faster pretty much accross the board from the 5.7 drivers.

My fps varies from 38-70+ for CS:S no matter what AA/AF I set. I am thinking it's my CPU but I am not so sure. For 5.8, I lost support for GTA:SA. The game wouldn't load at all but it seems I got improvements for the CS:S stress test (80 fps) before I put it back to catalyst 5.6.

Try ATi Tray Tools instead as it's a fantastic utility. Also you really should be running SP2.

ok i used driver cleaner pro in safe mode, got rid of everything. installed cat 5.8. it auto-detected X800 Series, so i went in and manually updated to 'X800 XT'. there were 3 versions of it, i picked the one listed on the bottom. (last time i updated this way with 5.7, it actually showed dates for each different version so i picked 6/05, this time no dates but cat 5.8 were the only drivers i installed since driver cleaner so i guess its up-to-date....but why the 3 versions of 'X800 XT'?)

oh yeah and i got +50 in 3DMark05, hurray :| that's like 1 fps in one of the tests.

Driver File ati2dvag.dll
Driver Version 6.14.10.6561
Driver Details 8.162-050803a2-025203C-ATI
Driver Date 8-3-2005

this is really weird. if i leave my computer sitting, i come back to a error message telling me explorer needs to be shut down. so i click ok and explorer (task bar, etc.) turn off and come back on. and that's it.

i haven't seen this happen while i am on the damn thing though. i guess i'll wait to see if it happens mid-game or something, and if so, go back to cat 5.7?

NM...but now I'm getting results that are a bit hard to believe off of just a driver update. All settings being the same (stock card settings, default driver settings, no OC on the CPU) I'm showing a jump from 4737 to 5053?!? That's only 15 off from my results on my old 3.4 prescott system with the card OC'd to 425/526.

Bench/Driver Version
P4, card OC'd - Driver version 6.14.10.6517 = 5068
AMD, card @ stock - Driver version 6.14.10.6497 = 4737
AMD, card @ stock - Driver version 6.14.10.6561 = 5053

I have the free version of 3Dmark so I can't change AA, AF, Resolution or other settings and like I said - I didn't make any changes to the default ATI settings.

On a side note, the latest drivers give you this message in 3Dmark05:

"NOTE: This project has not been run with Futuremark approved drivers, or the status of the drivers can not be determined. The accuracy of the results can not be guaranteed. For more information on how to get a valid and comparable result, please refer to this page."

Any thoughts?

That seems like a way wrong score.

I'm actually browsing results on ORB and there's at least one other result with the same CPU speed, card default clocks and the new drivers. They're getting 5171 but with 1GB more RAM...

I went from 46 FPS to 36 FPS! Holy crap...I had to revert back to Catalyst 4.1 to get back to ~46 FPS.

Maybe I'll get better performance with some other titles.

I think you should re-check your CP settings and the D3 settings.
Some D3 video settings get re-set after a change to them.

My 5.8 results are unchanged at the res I play at.
Medium 10x7 = 51.0 fps

I ran High quality for you at 8x6 = 62.9 fps

CP OGL settings on high performance.
(except for Mipmap detail on Performance due to fuzzy text in High Quality)

I use both a sapphire 9800pro and an evga 6800Ultra frequently, and I can't say either companies drivers are any better than the others. With the betas available for nvidia & the monthly driver releases from ATi, I'd say they're about on par in just about every way--quality and quantity.

I see no noticeable difference on my 9800pro with the 5.8's coming from the 5.7's.
