I guess not to shocking given the problems this year. Whether his direction actually had much to do with them, who knows?

Perhaps a "For the good of the company" type move? I suppose it's possible he "wants to spend more time with the family", but I'm guessing he'll turn up elsewhere.

hahaha... Yeah I'm sure he's going to go work for someone else now. He's been working at ATI for over 20 years and is a millionaire. He couldn't possibly just want to retire... this must be another conspiracy and thankfully we have Rollo here to point it out for us.

It's not about the money for guys like him- it's about the power, having structure and purpose in life. He's been a multimillionaire a long time, could have retired long ago by your "logic".

Another thing is that in general, people live at the level of their income and need to keep feeding that. So even though Ho may have millions, he may have several homes he's maintaining, kids at Harvard, companies he owns and has to support through bad times, etc..

LOL

I mention three reasons a millionaire might continue to work, and Crieg picks the one that could go either way.

Let me break down what I said for you Creig, and help you understand!

Another thing is that in general, people live at the level of their income and need to keep feeding that.
By this, I mean that the larger your income level is, the larger your expenses are. For someone like Ho, that may include staff at multiple homes and/or businesses. The expenses may have been covered by his salary at ATI to one degree or another, and stepping down at ATI might force an unwanted lifestyle change. (sale of of subsidized companies, less used properties)

So even though Ho may have millions, he may have several homes he's maintaining, kids at Harvard, companies he owns and has to support through bad times, etc..

By using the term "may" here, I'm saying it's possible that this third reason is one explanation a guy like Ho would keep working.

http://www.answers.com/topic/may-1
Used to indicate a certain measure of likelihood or possibility: It may rain this afternoon.

You see Creig, I doubt anyone is really dense enough to read what I said (which boils down to: a millionaire might work due to need for power, purpose, or revenue) and come to the conclusion that I said "Nobody can afford to retire!".

So you must just be nitpicking/trolling.

Unless you can somehow prove that all millionaires have no further need of income, I think my statement that a millionaire may need income from work is valid.

Does that help Creig? If you PM me, I can explain it further, to save you the embarassment of posting such nonsense again. I want to help you Creig. I am offering you time out of my day to help you understand things like this, because that is the sort of giving guy I am!

I didn't realize that you were such close friends with him that you could know that he worked ONLY for those reasons. You must be a really important guy to be able to rub elbows with the likes of Mr. Ho.

Mr Ho stated:

I have decided to spend more time with family and pursue my personal interests.

You know, Rollo, some people actually DO want to do those things. And if Mr Ho has millions in the bank then he's well enough off to be able to.

I know/have known millionaires who keep working.

By your logic are you NOT an important guy because you don't?

Really?

What if he has $10 million in assets and own a company that loses $2 million a year?

Think the interest on $10m will cover that?

I knew of a privately held firm that lost big money every year so the son-in-law could have a job as CEO. Some people have bigger problems than you or I Creig.

Well, you can "What if" all day long. But Mr Ho stated he wanted to spend more time with this family after 20 years of founding/working for ATI. So unless you have some evidence to the contrary, I hope you don't mind if I take Mr Ho's word over your "What ifs".

I think it's funny that Rollo is allowed to 'what if' all day long, but if an ATi fan were to 'what if' then he considers it trolling or ignoring the facts.

Insider trading is commonplace. Sometimes they like to pick out a few people and make an example of them. It gives the illusion that justice is ocassionally being done.

Thats funny because I didn't know Rollo was "getting away" with anything. The fact is while most of Rollos news is either Pro Nvidia or possibly Anti-ATI. No matter what he says about it he gets slagged. The fact is he stated facts and said this might be good news for ATI, I don't understand what is wrong with it.

On the other hand Most CEOs that are going to be fired by the board of directors, tend to retire or resign as an act of saving face. About the only CEO I can think of that did not go this route was Steve Jobs, he was so angry about being fired by Apple, and thought that most people would see that it was his brilliance that got apple to where they are, that he wanted to make sure everyone new he was not leaving of his own accord. It besides the point that he was right and that move set them back 10-15 years.

So for most CEOs and other head hanchos retiring and resigning are generally not for the reasons stated and there is no reason to believe its any different. Most people that high, and esspecially company founders, have to have the reigns removed form their cold dead fingers, and anything earlier then that has to be questioned. Nobody is saying that be hiding the fact that he was getting booting is good or bad, but usually its an agreement between the person and the board with the board having all the leverage.

I didn't realize that somebody who claims to be retiring to spend time with their family is automatically a liar.

Oh, and try to be a bit more polite next time Mr. "Duvie for MOD". Starting off a response with "Use your brain" isn't exactly going to endear you to the masses.

Maybe Duvie doesn't care if he endears himself to you, or think it's impolite to ask you to think about what you say?

The FACT of the matter is that I posted a video related news item, and even said this could be good news for ATI, as others have noted.

You seem to be trolling, as usual. (which might not help your cause to get another person on the board to put "Creig for Mod" in their sig)

Heh, as thankless of a job as mod is, many apparently aspire to it!

So then, you agree that this is the reason he "retired" then. Even without knowing anything about the man. Even thought Rollo used the word "may" and "It's possible" many times over, you treat his words as if he is stating a fact. Why? Oh, I forgot, you're just trolling.

Heh, as thankless of a job as mod is, many apparently aspire to it!

I'm positive that I saw somenoe post in an earlier thread where you bashed ATi for insider trading that this man was cleared. Again, right in the news story it says that he was cleared of the charges, but you still continue to bring up this issue. Discuss hardware, and for the love of God stop trying to start e-fights among overzealous geeks. I know for sure that you actually are completely aware of what you're doing, and really is it that great a source of entertainment in your life? Go fishing and drinking like you repeatedly say you do when people counter your points, give your son another few hundred dollars worth of computer hardware, and STOP POSTING THIS CRAP.

Post more benchmarks, post about games and other enthusiast stuff, but insider trading might be better suited to an investment forum, not a computer hardware one. Your personal opinions about CEOs, ways of life, and most other things for that matter are irrelevant, and I strongly believe that you know it, and again I'm going to restate that for some reason you must get some personal satisfaction out of it. It's not offensive to me personally, but I come here to read about video cards and video performance, maybe even *gasp* drivers. Not this:

By this, I mean that the larger your income level is, the larger your expenses are. For someone like Ho, that may include staff at multiple homes and/or businesses. The expenses may have been covered by his salary at ATI to one degree or another, and steping down at ATI might force and unwanted lifestyle change. (sale of subsidized companies, less used properties)

This has NOTHING to do with video hardware, so again I ask you to please knock off the BS that you cunningly pose as a hardware topic. This is not a flame, an insult, or a personal bash. I just want all of the ridiculous drama to end. Threads get locked for wasting bandwith all the time in this forum, and half of the threads you post end up doing essentially the same thing. Even your subtitle stating:
Wasn't he one of the defendants in insider trading suits?

Just beckons for people to respond aggressively. You post links like this:

By using the term "may" here, I'm saying it's possible that this third reason is one explanation a guy like Ho would keep working.

http://www.answers.com/topic/may-1

So I find it hard to believe that you lack the ability to google around, and find out once and for all if, indeed, Ho was implicated in a suit. But, again, you don't. I have a guess at why, but then if you used your common sense--being successful like you say you are, I'm sure you have it Rollo--you wouldn't have put that in the subtitle. Again, it's just subtle, argument-starting text that just happens to show up in a lot of your threads, poised as Video discussion, but really much more than that, and less of it at the same time.

Think about it.
