ATI just lost a fanboi!

I've got 3 ATI cards in my PCs at home:

AIW 9000 Pro
AIW 8500DV
8500LE

I've been really happy with them up till tonight.

The Gemstar software that shipped with the 8500DV sucked. My brother in law just told me about an available upgrade, so I went to ATIs site to get it.

I start the download, and it requires the original CD. Crap! I just moved and haven't fully unpacked, so I had to tear through 6 big boxes of crapola to find the original disc. I finally found it, get it in the computer, only to have the upgrade installer tell me that I have an invalid disc. WTF?!?!?!

Ok, calm down, and read the fine print. Only 9200s or newer qualify for the free upgrade. All others have to buy a NEW disc for $9.99 + s&h.

Never. Ever. Again.

I'll never buy an ATI product for as long as I live. Charging me for upgrades to the software that's required to use the hardware I purchased from them is unreasonable.

EDIT: Sorry, it's the 9000 or higher. But my 9000 disc is long gone.

Hewlet packard did something similiar for its P4 scanner (I think that was the model maybe H4). The situation was that if you wanted to use their scanner with win2K (back when scanners were not everywhere for very cheap) you had to send them $10 for the software upgrade to do so from win98 to 2k or the scanner just wouldnt work. This was at least 5 years ago and ever since I have not purchased a single HP piece of hardware and never will again. I purchased the software and burned it and shared it with everyone I know who had the same scanner. That is unbelievable bad business.

I have to agree with him. I started off with ati with an 8 meg card around 1992. I have at least 10 ati cards around rhe house. Installed currently are 9700 pro, 2 8500dv, 7500 and a 9500. I do not know where each cd is for each card. I downloaded the software from ati and same thing happened. After about 10 hours of messing with trying to get the latest and greatest installed on htpc with 8500dv I decided to go and buy a 9600aiw. Copied the disk that was in the box and returned the card. Still had problems but got it all installed. ATI sucks with you need to buy the disk. I just bought the 8500dv not to long ago. I will still buy there products though because I think they are the best currently. At the time I was so ticked off that it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I will get over on ATI anytime I can now for that trick.

They don't charge you for software upgrades thats required to use your hardware, and every version of MMC is available for download absolutely free. There is no upgrade of Gemstar, or ANY GEMSTAR download available on the ATI site at all. You upgrade Gemstar using ITS upgrade wizard. The new Cyberlink DVD decoders are what they charge for if you don't have the proper ATI installation disc.

Since you're apparently using their lower end hardware from over 2 years ago, I don't think they are on their way to the hardware store to buy "For Sale" signs for their factories with the loss of you as a customer?

Gemstar is the EPG for AIW cards.

Since you're apparently using their lower end hardware from over 2 years ago,

AIW cards are not their lower end hardware.

I have the same beef with them over not allowing the latest MMC to install with the TV Wonder VE. I had a 9600 Pro for a while and had version 8.x installed and I had the nifty pause live TV, rewind live TV stuff. I returned the 9600 Pro for my FX5900 and everything worked until the next time I formatted my drive for normal maintenance I tried to install MMC 8.x and it wouldn't install. How do they expect to shed their image of having horrible software when they lock you into an old release of it on a product that is currently being sold when the new version works perfectly?

I was going to buy a 9200-but it was DX8.1, and I wanted VS/PS 2.0 and DX9 support , so I went for a Jetway FX5200 128MB with TV Out and DVI .

No, they probably won't be going under because of my not buying a the 9800 AIW that I had budgeted for next month. But I plan on telling everybody that they did this. And I'll not be recommending their products when helping people at work and such. I've voting with my feet and my mouth.

This is for my HTPC machine, and it's running with my 8500DV. There are two reasons I wanted the upgrades. Gemstar sucks, and DVD playback sucks. When I was told they had new upgrades out, I was all over it. Bah. Time for nVidia and Hauppage.

Silly problem. Go to a shop you know, tell them to make a copy of a driver CD from a newer card and you're ready. This thread makes no sense 'cos it has an easy fix. Just use your brain and get whatever is best and them find solutions to this little and meaningless issues with easy fix.
