I think you guys are getting it a bit wrong here.
Quote from ATI:
How do I get the latest Multimedia Center integrated suite of software applications?
Free Download - Owners of RADEON? 9000/9200/9500/9600/9700/9800 series graphics adapters,ALL-IN-WONDER® 9800 PRO/ 9700 PRO / 9600 PRO / 9000 / VE multimedia adapters, or users who have an existing MMC 8.x installation CD have access to a free upgrade to MMC 8.8.
Buy Now - $9.99 (USD) plus shipping and handling for MMC 8.1 Installation CD for all RADEON? owners. This CD can be used to validate the installation of MMC 8.8.
It seems fairly reasonable that ATI are offering a very cheap upgrade to their software from one version to the other.
This is actually far cheaper than the cost of upgrading PowerDVD from v.4 to v.5 - you certainly will not be getting a free upgrade from them.
For those with MMC 7.x and the DVD player 7.x, there are upgrades available to the latest (and last) versions of these f you aren't too worried about using MMC 8:
MMC 7 upgrade
ATI DVD player 7 upgrade
On a different note, that is BS about nvidia giving better support than ATI in this respect of multimedia/DVD playback software..... they never even had any DVD software of their own until recently when they brought out their nvDVD software. HOWEVER, that is not free for all nvidia owners - in fact if you didn't recieve it with your graphics card you will have to pay nvidia for it....... hmmm, what great service.
This is all not worth arguing about anyway. I personally don't like the ATI software and prefer PowerDVD anyway (which incidentally came with my Radeon).
