I think you guys are getting it a bit wrong here.

Quote from ATI:
How do I get the latest Multimedia Center integrated suite of software applications?

Free Download - Owners of RADEON? 9000/9200/9500/9600/9700/9800 series graphics adapters,ALL-IN-WONDER® 9800 PRO/ 9700 PRO / 9600 PRO / 9000 / VE multimedia adapters, or users who have an existing MMC 8.x installation CD have access to a free upgrade to MMC 8.8.

Buy Now - $9.99 (USD) plus shipping and handling for MMC 8.1 Installation CD for all RADEON? owners. This CD can be used to validate the installation of MMC 8.8.

It seems fairly reasonable that ATI are offering a very cheap upgrade to their software from one version to the other.
This is actually far cheaper than the cost of upgrading PowerDVD from v.4 to v.5 - you certainly will not be getting a free upgrade from them.

For those with MMC 7.x and the DVD player 7.x, there are upgrades available to the latest (and last) versions of these f you aren't too worried about using MMC 8:

MMC 7 upgrade

ATI DVD player 7 upgrade

On a different note, that is BS about nvidia giving better support than ATI in this respect of multimedia/DVD playback software..... they never even had any DVD software of their own until recently when they brought out their nvDVD software. HOWEVER, that is not free for all nvidia owners - in fact if you didn't recieve it with your graphics card you will have to pay nvidia for it....... hmmm, what great service.

This is all not worth arguing about anyway. I personally don't like the ATI software and prefer PowerDVD anyway (which incidentally came with my Radeon).

rbV5, I tried downloading MMC 9.0 from your link, and it did the same thing as 8.x (unpacked, executed, then got to "Configuring Windows Installer" and crapped out there).

Looking at Rage3D, it appears you are not alone. For some reason the install just stops with no error, but version 7.9 installs fine for some users.

One user:Well Im up and running.
Here is what I had to do:
I actually had to hunt through regedit to find all the installs, programs, and uninstall information to manually look for all things ATI. There were 3 prior versions of MMC still floating around, in both the uninstall and programs, and most were fully intact.( RegCleaner, and other programs did not get these)
Messing around in the Registry is scary if you arent comfortable doing it. Never delete anything you arent SURE about.
Anyway
Hkey_Local_Machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversions\unistall was where I found a corrupted version of MMC88. I also did searches (FIND) in regedit for ATI and MMC88 you may want to do them for all versions of MMC that you have used. This was in addition to manually hunting through All my Dlls, INFs and hidden Devices to remove litterally hundreds of old ATI files. I think my Registry and Devices, Dlls, INFs are as clean as they have ever been now.
3 days of this crap.....
But.... I WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!! thought it may be of help to all of you.Depending on your error msgs, try hunting for the numbers given in your registry and see what pops up.
.

Looks like a mess I'll look and see what else I can find out.

Update: Notice that most of the posts with the same problem are using a Nvidia graphics card (still wading through posts)

umm, ok

Yes, the 5200 is a weak card but it's at least better than the 9200. If he was planning to buy a 9200, it means he didn't allocate much money to spend on a videocard in the first place. So, within his set price range, he bought a card that supports DX9 rather than DX8.1. So, it wasn't a stupid choice but a smart one.

If he had set a bigger budget, then it would've been a different story. But, seeing how was going to buy a 9200, his budget wasn't set high.

Errr, except the 5200 is slower than mud and its DX9 support is questionable, like much of the rest of the FX line. Accelerating a moped doesn't make it a Ferrari
If you look at benchmarks, the Radeon 7500 beats the 9000 in some DX8 tests, but the 9000 supports DX8.1 and the 7500 is a DX7 part.

Well I swapped out my FX5900 for a PCI Radeon 7200 and MMC 9.0 magically installed and ran. Put in my old GeForce4 Ti4600 (the FX apparently was killed by static or something, the monitor comes out of power saving mode, but gives a blank screen) and MMC9 won't run. This is probably the last straw, I'm not going to bother with crap like this. ATI's hardware is usually top-notch but their software SUCKS.

I don't think TV Wonder is indicative of ATI's product line myself. A good share of problems in the AIW forum at Rage3D are actually TV Wonder issues from what I see. The fact that putting the radeon card and the installation worked, "seems" to follow that almost all of the "install just dies" issues seem to include an NV graphics card + TV Wonder. However, installing the ti4600 shouldn't have fubured it I wouldn't think. Do you get any error messages when you try to start the TV applet? <wtf about your FX5900, that really suxors..bummer
