Looking for a new laptop to replace my very well loved T42, and still have my old T30. Looking at the T60 but the only one that seems to have everything I want is a T60p. My main concern is with this video card. I use my laptop as a backup/out of town gaming box so the video system is somewhat important.

Can anyone tell me anything about this card, and if I should avoid it as a gaming box?

The V5200 is basically the FireGL version of an MR X1600; 12 pixel pipelines, etc. Here's a look at how the MR X1600 does gaming:

You will want to load modded drivers on these, as the workstation-class drivers offer stability & performance for 3D rendering; not 3D gaming performance. I would expect performance to be on par with the results I linked you; possibly higher given the better system (Core Duo, etc).

I wouldn't say avoid it, but if gaming is a big thing you might look into other options. However for portability, I think the T60p offers the most performance out there. I don't think a 12-pipe GPU exists in <15.4" notebooks outside of the T60p, but I've not looked into it extensively.

Lucky guy. I couldn't get my wife to fork over (or co-fork) the dough for the p, so I got a 2Ghz T60 with an X1400. I think the 15" T60p is on sale right now.

One thing I want to mention since you want to game on it is that the Flexview screens are said to have slower response rates, although how much slower I'm not sure. I wanted a 14" T60p, not the 15", as I wanted it to be more portable. I have seen the 15" Flexview in person, and it is really bright and beautiful.

That FireGL card is basically a rebranded X1600 with different drivers, or so I've read. Check out this thread-- fbrdphreak posted performance numbers for various cards:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=51&threadid=1826072&enterthread=y

fbrdphreak said that the workstation-class drivers impose roughly a 10% penalty on gaming. You can try the stock X1600 drivers, and I've had luck with Omega drivers on a couple of other machines. You can overclock using Atitool.

Edit: Beat to the punch. I should get back to work, anyway.
