Simple Question:
Is your adapter listed as Unknown Device in Device Manager?

If yes, are you concerned (please explain)?

If you know how to resolve this please post.

Thanks,
-JC

MY PREVIOUS POST:
Hi,

I have a new Ati 9800 Pro installed with Cat 3.7 drivers and have been running okay for over a week or two now. Tonight I wanted to install the Rage3D Tweak to start overclocking the card or even see if its worth it in some games I play. To get to the point It wouldn't find my card to select from. So I looked in device manager and can't find any Adapter. I looked under Unknown Device and there is two 9800 Pro. One just 9800 Pro and the other is 9800 Pro - Secondary. I assumed it was a driver problem and reinstalled several times without any issues. However I can't get the Tweak software to reconize my 9800 Pro nor and I get it out of the Unknown Device category. I've check the forum for others having the same issue. I found some post relating, but no solution. PLEASE HELP!

P4 3.06@3.22
Gigabyte 8IXHP (i850E)
768MB RDRAM
ATI 9800 Pro - Retail
Audigy
Windows XP Home

Tried these from Rage3D
First, you should have a secondary - it is for the extra plug on the back of your card.

First, please try making sure you have run a SCANDISK on your system, have cleaned out your \windows\temp folder and your \windows\temporary internet files folders.

Then, what I would do is set your system to VGA PCI and uninstall all the Catalyst stuff.

Boot into Safe Mode, delete all traces of video cards other than VGA PCI from the device list, including those under Unknown. You could go into the \windows\inf\other folder and delete any ATI related INF files.

Then I would reboot and cancel any auto-detection of the card or monitor. Once at the desktop, install the following:

Motherboard Chipset Drivers
Monitor INF (instead of Plug and Play)
Direct X 9.0b
Catalyst Control Panel
Catalyst Video Drivers

I would start with Catalyst 3.5, then if that works you are set. If not, you could try 3.6, then 3.7.

Good luck!

It seems to be working, but I'm worried it's not setup correctly. Also I can't install rage tweak.

Maybe you should try Driver Cleaner and reinstall the Cat 3.7 drivers. Did you have another card installed before installing the 9800?

I did this to start with. I think it will resolve the upgrading from cat 3.5 to 3.7, but not the Unknown Device.

Your saying the video card is listed under unknown device instead of display adapters? Try uninstalling the card from device manager. Both primary and secondary then click
on the computer with magnifying glass to find new hardware.

"If" you have followed the directions for driver cleaner to the letter (you read the readme), and "if" you have installed the CAT 3.7 drivers using ATI's install notes (read those Rage3D posts with caution, they commonly contain misinformation) "and" your device manager still lists your card as unknown...I suspect your AGP driver. Make sure you have the latest AGP driver for your MoBo or if perhaps there is a known issue with your Mobo and you need a bios flash.

Thats actually odd to be seeing that. I bet your probley thinking you got sold a fake card or something, well thats what i'd be thinking. Unistall all the drivers, and the control panel too. Once it restarts then clean out all files of ATi, and even delete any ATi files in "RegEdit", but dont delete any ATi stuff in system files. Restart your comp, by that time you'll be running on the default ones that come with Win XP, so go download the latest drivers either 3.6 or 3.7 full. See if you still get Unknown Device...

Rage tweak looks in the registry for the Card. Since it cannot find it is is not there. Sounds like you have another binary in there; perhaps from an old card. Try and delete the cards drivers then restart in VGA mode. Now run Driver cleaner and then run Cab cleaner to get rid of any mis identifying inf files.

After you have done this restart in VGA mod and install the drivers. The registry should be updated. Just incase your old card was other that ATI then use the Driver cleaner to get rid of any traces of this before you install the new drivers in VGA mode.

if you have video in/out model or all in wonder you need to install ATI WDM TV capture drivers.you can download it from ati or look your driver cd, when you install it you see 2 devices under sound, video controllers ati wdmspesialized mnvd codec and ati rage theatervideo(not sure from this one).

You will have two devices listed because of the Dual-Head capabilities of the Radeon. One usually shows as: "Radeon 9700Pro on (insert monitor name)and the other will be listed "Radeon 9700Pro secondary on default monitor" or something to that effect.

If you are using Win98, you should boot into safe mode and delete ALLthe Display Adaptors that are there due to installing drivers multiple times. Re-boot, and windows should find and install the drivers you already have installed. If it is an Exclamation point in Other Devices of Device Manager, that is what has occured.

Make sure you are getting rid of the multiple entries in the registry. BY now there could be quite a few....

Did u happen to install the drivers by selecting custom setup, or express?? If custom, give express a shot!

I would also run driver cab cleaner and SP1 cleaner(both in tools menu of driver cleaner) in safe mode before you run Driver Cleaner also in safe mode.,btw make sure you remove ATi control panel and drivers first via Windows control panel.

Okay.

Another 2 hours down the ATI drain. I tried everything. I couldn't get my system out of VGA mode and couldn't install ATI fr$%%$ drivers. Holly shoot ati has a major flaw in it's driver installations.

After cleaning everything again, rebooting to last good config, reinstalled the drivers and rebooted. Both the Pro and the Pro Secondary have been installed. However it's still under the category "Unknown" and in the device type it equals "Unknown Device" in Device Manager. When I check the adpter tab in the display settings it shows 9800 Pro, but if I drill down in to Adapter Properties. It shows Device as "Unknown".

Well I guess I know why I never seen this resolution posted anywhere for others who posted. It's because It's not fixed. I'll call ATI when I get a chance. I'm very fustrated with the card and manufactures drivers. I MISS MY ROCK SOLID (NEVER HAD A PROBLEM) NVIDIA!

NVIDIA DRIVER INSTALLATION =

ATI DRIVER INSTALLATION = :disgust:

Ive seen this happen before when you select custom install instead of express. Try that if you havent!
If not, then yeah.. somethings messed in your reg. Its not allowing the drivers to install properly.

i suggest u use something called Drive clean or something found here. http://www.driverheaven.net/cleaner/
Works well.

I disagree with you that my rigs (windows or whatever) messed up. If I was to slap n Nvidia card back in my system I guarantee it would be running in minutes. As the austrialians would say, no worries mate! So how could this be my rig?

Also, when I booted in safemode I didn't see any adapters to clean out. Then I installed the drivers. The drivers are installed correctly. Go to rage3d forums and search on unknown device in the 9800 support. You'll find others with the same problem, but no one found a solution.

Theres an answer that helped someone. Also, again, i ask... which install method did u use? Custom or Express? and YES your reg is messed up somewhere. Meaning that whatever is left behind from NV install, is not allowing ATi's driver to install correctly. Its always safe to reformat when changing video cards. If not, uninstall EVERYTHING that has to do with video. This incl DX and all the reg files. THERE are known issues with installing a diff make card after Nv. Theres tons of junk thats left behind which will affect the next card. The reg is very messy after this process. Actually. this happens alot with 3d card makers. *Hence why the install worked in safe mode. DX and other regs are not being used, so, the install is easier.

Trust me, if there was a known issue with the ATi installer, i would know about it along with the whole ATi community. All the searchs thats been done and posted @ R3D, have been either fixed by reformatting or uninstalling/reinstalling dx and such.

Glad to see your up and running tho'
Cheers!

Umm, that seems to be an issue. If your LKG config has a copy of the old drivers imaged, that may be the problem. (Gotta love System Restore).
Try using something like the driver cleaner to remove the old drivers, and then just install the Radeon drivers.

I restored from a previous point (day before I got the card in the mail) and the display adapter showed up. I simplily removed the Nvidia drivers, rebooted, installed ATI 3.7, installed and rebooted. Working great.

Two things learned here.

1) Don't use Driver Cleaner or third party tools to remove drivers

2) System restore removed files on hard drives (lost some downloads including the recent 500MB+ update to Desert Combat .4)

Thanks!
