I am about to install an ATI Radon card. I currently have a Voodoo 3 3000 card installed.
I want to make sure the registry is clean of all Voodoo (PDF) entries.

Should I search registry for "Voodoo" and "3DFX" entries and delete each as it is found????

Then prior to installing the Radeon card I would go into Device Manager, Display Adapters, and remove
the check from "Exists in all hardware profiles" for the Voodoo card in device manager; and put a check in
"Exists in all hadware profiles" for my onboard card.

Then open control panel and remove 3DFX tools.

Then shut down computer and remove the Voodoo card.

Boot into BIOS and enable my onboard video.

Then boot into safe mode and remove all Voodoo and 3DFX files
on the hard drive including INF files.

Check device manager (display adapter) and make sure the on board "Standard VGA" video is there
and delete and Voodoo device if it still shows still in display adapters.

Let windows boot into the on board video using standard VGA drivers.

Shut down and install the Radeon card.

Disable onboard video in Bios.

Boot into windows letting it find the Radeon card.

Allow Windows to load standard VGA drivers with the Radeon card.

Then insert the Radeon install CD and load the ATI drivers.

Am I correct in this procedure???

Thanks

Mike V

One word - format!

You sound like the kinda guy who likes to keep stuff clean - well, format c: /u is the easiest way to clean all that old crap you have laying about.

Besides... its so nice to see a computer without all those programs that seem to pile up. Who else has looked in the Program Files directory and found stuff they forgot existed?

Just my $0.02.

Cheers,

Thanks!! Yah my registry is spanking claen as are both my hard drives. It is something I have always kept on top of over the years. I also reformat once a year. But that still doesn't address this post.

Hello,

I just did the same upgrade with a Radeon 32mb DDR LE, although I'm still working on cleaning the registry bit. I went to Control Panel/Display, selected the settings tab and clicked on the advanced button. Then selected the adapter tab and changed it to Standard VGA, clicked OK, then apply. Received error about the new adapter not supporting the hardware, clicked OK to continue. Then removed 3DFX tools with add/remove programs. Checked device manager for selected adapter. Rebooted and shut down. Exchanged cards and booted back up, then installed downloaded 7199 drivers with start/run. Rebooted and installed tweaking utility. Been running fine since. DVD's look great again. I never did like the DVD playback quality of the 3dfx and the way it looked in some games.

hth,

Don't forget to remove any third party overclocking utilities if you have them.
