This goes along which is better cards, ive been wondering for some time now.
alot of people say, nividia is smoother, more reliable.
ive had nvidias, and they werent bad cards, but they all sucked.
for once i bought a radeon for the first time.
I bought the 9200 SE (AKA CHEATERS CARD- you can see invisible people)
and it was awesome! it wasnt top of the line, but it rocked, alot better then
the Nvidia 6150 i had. and i have this 6800 GT, its got 256 mg. but it also sucks.
graphics are horrible. so i bought this card i have now, X800 GTO2 256 mg 256 bit
and the graphics are amazingly awesome and sharp and clear, DVD playback is better,
and my fps on counterstrike stays at 250. so which is better? Nvidia or ATI?

I like ATI because the card itself is great (I owned Rage 128, and Radeon 9200 128mb) but ATI has some problems with softwares and drivers to work with games especially EA I never tried GeForce card before I know GeForce driver is very superior than ATI.
I think that is all I can say.

Yes, if you can actually tell a difference and feel that strongly, then ATI is the way to go.

To me both are on par in performance, although I do have a personal preference towards nVidia cards, as I've had good experiences from them.

I'm a bit like that, slight preference to nVidia but then I don't want to buy a new motherboard to get Crossfire and I can only see myself buying ATI again when M2 comes around (providing they actually have boards available) otherwise i'll be sticking to nidia for the forseeable future.

IQ wise i've not really noticed a difference while PLAYING a game, not standing still analysing a chain link fence or shadows on my gun. I'd rather spend my time having fun that picking faults with every little thing. Also, PureVideo suits me nicely and i'll be looking forward to Forceware 85 to enhance the HD experience.

Every company makes a few "dog" cards (FX series, 9200SE, X300SE for examples) and sometimes you'll get a card that is just broken but in general i've been happier with nVidia under the bonnet. I do run a 9600 in another machine still, and an ATI Rage3D 8MB card in the server so i'm not completely biased.

I always had ATI's (up to the 9700Pro), and now chose nVidia (6800GS and 7800GTX)... I liked the ATI cards a lot, but I can't say anything bad about the nV's... Image Quality is roughly equal (but of course early SM2.0 versus SM3.0 isn't a fair comparison), so I'm actually pretty happy with the nVidia's... I just look for the most bang for the buck value, or the best one available...

guess it's safe say to you're an ATI fan....what was the purpose of this thread, other than to flame NV and praise ATI...seesh you sound like you work for ATI's marketing team.

Totally subjective, neither is better than the other in many ways per say.

I personally like ATI better. Their drivers have been easier to deal with (install driver only and ATI Tray Tools instead of CCC) and i like the natural vibrance that the RADEONs have. On the other hand, I own 2x7800GTs right now. Nvidia's drivers aren't bad (although their performance options panel could use some work), but I don't feel that either companys drivers are better than the other. The one thing that nvidia has going for it is performance and upgrade paths. SLI MBs are everywhere (even found one for my s754 3700+) and the best cards are cheaper and currently perform better than the ATi equivalents. Crossfire on the other hand has been a little scarce and more expensive to own. Fast forward a year when Crossfire is more widely available and i will probably switch to ATI again.

I look at specific products, you cant say in general who's better. If you count who has the fastest card on paper, then Nv wins with the 512gtx. If you count who has the best bang for buck card, then Ati wins with the gto2. I got put off by Nv since the FX cards, and since then I always find some flaw in Nv cards that further puts me off, whether it's a broken PVP, texture shimmering, or blocky shadows - it just makes me feel like they're cutting corners. But if Nv released a really great card for a great price - like say a 16 pipe card that could unlock to 20 pipes, oc by150mhz or more, and was available for ~$200 then I might overlook some of the flaws in an otherwise outstanding product.

LOL If you want to trade your 6800GT for my half-crippled 9700Pro, then be my guest... I think I can live with that horrible card...

Can't really say which one is better.. it all depends on the generation.

it goes something like this

GF2 vs ATI rage- Nvidia is better
GF3 vs 8500 - ATI is better
GF4 vs 8500 - Nvidia is better
GF5 vs 9600/9800 - ATI is much much better
GF 6xxx vs X300/600/800 - Equal, Nvidia wins out on shader 3.0 support
GF 7xxx vs x1800xt - Nvidia is better, runs cooler, released earlier, SLI support is better

see how it switches with each generation.? so its not possible to say one is better than the other.

but in my opinion(biased), in general, Nvidia runs more stable/faster , yet ATI produces better video.

One of my friends used to have a gf2 gts, and when playing the original CS it would stutter when you're coming around a corner and somebody else is there. And all this time I though the key to gaming is smooth fps, when what really matters is low end hardware and buggy drivers!

Personally, I prefer ATI, also because I always have ATI, and I prefer Red PCB. But i think tharputting this question as ATI Radeon vs nVidia Geforce isn't right. We have to talk in some models, like 7800GTX vs X1800XT, X800GTO vs 6600GT, or others. For ex, a FX5200 is a nVidia geforce, but can't be compared to a ATI Radeon X1800XT. I think that nVidia was the only choise possible until the launch of Radeon 8500, that was better than Geforce3. After this, nVidia has created geforce4, that was better, but ATI answered with 9700PRO. ATI Radeon 9xx0 was almost always better than the Geforce FX 5xxx, in DIrectX 9.0, this difference was terrible for nVidia. With geforce 6, nVidia has draw with ATI Radeon X, with nVidia suporting SM3 and ATI having genneraly a better performances, principaly his 2nd generation cards (X550, X800GT/GTO, X850). nVidia Geforce serie 7 was only lauched for the high-end, nVidia doing the same that ATi ahs done before and renewing his 6x00 serie with enw models to compete with the X1x00 série of ATI. nVidia generaly does better, with 6600-DDR2 doing better than X1300PRO, 6800GS smacking X1600XT and 7800GT doing well against X1800XL. Only 7800GTX does worst than a ATI card, in this case X1800XT, but nVidia lauched 7800GTX512 to keep the 1rst place. You can't forgetthe new S3 Chrome S27, that is a 90nm GPU at 700MHz, with DDR3 and 128bits, and that performs better than X1300 and 6600-DDR2. A good surprise for me.

its all about preference....

for me at the moment you could toss a coin, ATI and NV are just as good as each other, you cant really fall off with either decision.

i will agree though that ATI have the advantage with Image Quality in a lot of places, but for some reason lately i get the feeling that Nvidia has the better all round product, they support their products better i feel (read opinion dont flame) theres more choice, drivers are great and utilize latest tech like dual core, SLI is the best multi GPU platform out there at this time, the pricing is good, the SLI features are good (ie any vendor mix n match) the rumoured stuff coming to purevideo sounds good, their DVD decoding (with the PVP decoders) is pretty damn good. i dont know Nvidia just have the better all round product, the better plan of action (ie hard launches).

not taking anything away from ATI, theyve been producing great cards since R300, that trend continues today with the R520 even though it was late, ATI wanted to puch technology and saddly things like this happen when you push things. this trend will probably continue further with the R580....shaping up to be a monster for sure, but Nvidia will be there to counter....Nvidia just seem to be ontop of things at the moment, theyre floating head above the water quite comfortably, ATI while still putting in sterling efforts just seem to be scrabbling for air......i reckon they'll find their feet again with R580.

my preference right now? nvidia.

they were the only ones that had what i wanted at the time.....SLI and for a decent price/performance, cards were readily available at every retailer, so i got to pick the cheapest, SLI 7800GT is indeed a mighty fine choice and is one of the fastest set ups available

my past preference ? ATI

9500pro was a bargain at £130 and its still sticking two fingers up at the big guns and ploughing through many of todays games with relative ease. coupled with sterling IQ and a thirst for overclocking like its on steriods....this card has been the best £130 i have ever spent....ever
