7800GT is faster in games. 1800XL has nicer looking 2D (non games) and decodes DVDs much faster. If you watch movies and such buy 1800XL if you like to play games 7800GT. I'm a gamer but I like great PQ leaving the X1800XL for me.

7800GT blows the X1800XL out of the water, but this deal is definitely looking good. Image quality, NV and ATI are on par already. Maybe in the Radeon 9800 days ATI had the lead, but that's really not a problem anymore...

I don't know about blowing the 1800XL out of the water. In most games the GT edges out the XL but in 3D Mark 05 the XL beats the GT soundly.

Let's not get into any NVidia vs ATI debates, but the 7800GT is the faster card for gaming hands down.

It's silly to compare the GT to the XL. They're two different classes.

On the other hand, when compared to the XT, the GT takes a steady bow and has a nice comfy seat (except when it comes to Doom 3 - rofl).


Anyway, this is a good card. It's not as good at the 7800GT, but it's most certainly a great buy for anyone that's in the market, but not wanting to spend more than $300 on a card.

bastids! i just bought a x800gto2. i should of bought this, although the flash is 100% guaranteed to unlock the 4 extra pipelines, i rather not have to deal with that stuff and buy the extra cooler just to oc to this cards specs. i would have been roughly the same price with no hassle.

Actually, its not. The X1800XL and 7800GT compete in the same pricepoint and performance class and is entirely appropriate to compare them. The XT competes with the 7800GTX and even the 7800GTX 512

Most of us are "enthusiasts" not just "gamers". There are some feature differences to consider as well as what games you play as to which has the best performance. Its silly to not consider all the factors when making an expensive purchase.

Um, the 7800gt is not necesarily faster. Xbitlabs has a nice review showing the XL is a bit better with higher settings in most games. And XL's overclock like mad. FOr exaample i can run stable at 620/720 and I can play COD2 at 650/750.

Um...the benches you reference clearly show the 7800GT is faster than the X1800XL in the VAST majority of the games/settings at stock GPU/RAM clocks.

The X1800XL does a LOT better when OC'd, but I'd imagine the 7800GT would turn this back around if for comparison's sake the reviewer had OC'd the 7800GT (which this site indicates in their "conclusions" section of their reviews that the 7800GT OC'd well, and the X1800XL did NOT OC well).

I'd like to buy an ATI card next, but if I don't get a lower price for less performance in the X1800XL, I'd buy another 7800GT again.
