ok here in oregon the backup network is up, (a good thing ) here is what you have to do to get one, clear all your pre set network settings, in other words blank TCP/IP out. then obtain IP address automaticly, and obtain DNS servers from automaticly. this will get you switched over if its availible in your area. if your not att@home, and your dead, good luck . but the ATTbi network is up. its DHCP only, no static stuff, it cycles every 4 days.

this is also posted in OT but posted it here so you'll could get a look see too.

It appears Lexington @home through insight is still working. My stuff is set up for DHCP also, so I am not sure about people with static set ups. This is what I got from insight:

"@Home affiliates including Insight are supporting AT&T in its bid to buy the @Home network. If the network were to go dark, there would be no cash coming in nor would there be any bids for @Home?s assets. Therefore, it makes no sense for @Home to ?pull the plug.?

If the unlikely occurs, we will cover your cost of a dial-up service until we can transition you back to our broadband service. As I mentioned in our earlier note, we are talking with AOL Broadband and Road Runner, and believe we can expedite a transition."

At least they will cover the cost of dial-up. That is mighty fine of them.

Edit: Their letters and updates about this whole thing.

I've been using a static IP with a router. I'll try unhooking the router and plugging a machine straight into the cable modem to see if a new IP address is obtained automatically. First however, I need some sort of signal going to my cable modem - there's no signal at all right now!

I tried setting up for DHCP - my modem seems to be stuck with a static IP address. I unplug it and plug power back into it and it keeps the same IP address. I have ATT@Home here but they don't seem to care much about users out here. Maybe I will get used to the phone line dial up access after a while, sure is slow

I personally care for the customers, can't say for the rest of the company however...try unplugging the modem for 10 min.

also I should mention the backup network is not 100% in place yet.

The computer or router is the device that gets the IP address. If you have a router, unplug it and try with just one computer. An IP address assigned by DHCP has what is called a lease, sometimes this is a short period, sometimes it is longer, those who are not getting a new ip address may need to manually refresh their ip. The following will work on win95/98 systems for sure, and probably ME. I can't remember off of the top of my head how to do it for 2000.

Start->Run
Type winipcfg
When the window comes up, click release all (or select your network card from the drop down list and click release to release just that ip)
Then click renew all. (or select your network card from the drop down list and click renew to renew just that ip)

That should give you a new ip of your problem is due to an IP address that will not refresh.

Hope it helps.

Well I did the deed - left it unplugged for about 15 minutes.

The good news - it lost it's static IP.
The bad news: flashy lites like no one's @home

Guess I will let it go until it finds it's way. At least I had this old trusty 56K modem here and with ICS I have my whole network sharing it!!! I only had one ISA slot though and so I had to remove the sound card from that machine to install the modem. Not so good since that's the kids gaming rig...

IJump,

According to techs from @Home in Louisville (Insight), Insight has come to an agreement for at least the next 9 months to keep service going (if @Home lasts that long )...They are also looking at other ISP's to take over or at least offer a choice..

I wouldn't count on @home lasting 9 months to be honest.. I would be surprised if they made it past the end of january.. I heard they are hemoraging $6m a day.

Luckily my ISP is totally transitioned off @home's backbone.. and has been for a while now (nearly 4 months).

personally I wouldn't care if @home rolled over and died.. I think the entire thing was a horribly bad idea to begin with and was doomed to this sort of an end.

LOL@Narzy.

Now, you really didn't tell her THAT did you?

I think I'm lucky it was just DNS that has gone out here...

Best of luck all!

Well, I feel sorry for the tech support people on the "front line" who have to take crap because of other people's problems. I didi it for a while, but got burned out on it. Good luck keeping your sanity Narzy.

Engineer, I hope they find another provider before @home can't hold up their end of the bargain. It is on for now........

I guess I can count myself lucky or something. I haven't had any problems as of yet. But I thought about calling Narzy just to give hima break. hehe

Narzy if I remember right we can ask them to calm down about twice depending on how they where yelling at you before you can cut them off. I would have done the same thing. But maybe not those exact words. Narzy, good luck. And you just reminded me why I hated doing Help desk.
