Better to pull it out and put a proper batt under there or best idea remove and spray in the high R value expanding foam. That way all voids are filled and that stuff exceeds an R15 3" batt like 3X.

6. Got an asphalt shingle roof? Been more than 5 years up there? Then it's time to re apply the white granular pebbles that have been blown off over time. These granuals are available in bags and you reapply them like sowing seed over a warm roof. There is also a compound you can apply to get some more "stick" to the roof.
Simply making the surface more reflective via the granuales white color can reduce interior temps.
Hrm.. didn't see any of that expanding foam at home depot. Also, if I were to use batts, wouldn't it be pretty useless too since it's still getting compressed?

as for #6... I have this issue with climbing on the roof... (and ditto w/ the siding job DrPizza, heh). I also have no idea what is on there, but I assume it's asphalt type.

And home depot is so useless.. no one could tell me how I would go about getting the cellulose insulation and details for how much I'd need to buy to get a free rental for the blower.

As kinda already said...

Just cover the rest of the attic with the blow in. Use the regular cellouse stuff not fiberglass. Blow it over the old stuff until you get the R factor you want. At least in the high 50's to low 60's should be good.

You can also put the rad barrier on the roof as the picture posted above shows. Do that before the blow in insulation.

Make sure your attic fan is working correct. If not and/or you don;t have one. Then the easiest thing is to geta solar power one. That way you don;t need to run new power wire and so forth.

Do not use the foam insulation in the attic. It is great for walls but not where you need to get to if you need to fix something or replace a ceiling light etc... The blow in stuff you just push to the side and do what you need and reapply. The foam would have to be cut out and then refilled in and cost quite a bit. Better R factor per inch, as I used it when I did some work on my house, but cost more.

The foam stuff I believe was in response to what to use under the plywood that is sitting up in the attic in place of the loose compressed fiberglass. Or I should just stuff cellulose in?

I still use blow in or even bates. My thing with foam is its great R factor per inch but you can't pull it up or just push it out of the way like blow in.

If one of my recessed light cans went bad I might hav eto pull it out and cut foam up and if it was a wiriing problem and the foam was near it oe even on it then have to mess with the foam even more.

Like I said before I have used the foam, I like it. But not for the attic.
