Audio out on GTX 285

I have been trying to find out if there is an audio out on the GTX 285. I see there is 2 DVI outs and an S-Video out which leads me to believe that audio will not come out of the card.

I have a really nice audio adapter but I don't use it for movie watching and I want to stream video from my PC to my TV via DVI to HDMI and I don't want to run audio cables. Straight HDMI would be very nice outerwise I have to run a bunch more cables from my Konnekt 8.

So is there a way to get audio out of the GTX 285?

Doesn't a video card give " VIDEO " ? For sound go for a " SOUND " card.

many cards now have passthroughs for obtaining audio through hdmi.

dvi and svideo, however, have no provisions for audio.

for NV, you should be able to pass audio through video card by using hdmi cable with dvi-hdmi adopter provided with your video card.

there is a S/PDIF port on your video card?
depend on your vendor, you may get a S/PDIF wire with your video card.

one end of that S/PDIF wire connect to that video card. connect the other end to your motherboard/standalone sound card's S/PDIF OUT port.

change windows sound output to digital.

depend audio you are trying to pass through, you may have to play with the audio setting with your player little bit.


btw, if you hear a pop noise and no actual sound from your tv, you probably connected your S/PDIF wire on the motherboard/sound card side in the wrong direction.

Only if there is a native HDMI port. DVI -> HDMI adapters will not provide audio. For cards with a native HDMI port, you have to connect the S/PDIF port on the vid card to the S/PDIF port on your motherboard. A cable is usually included


For ATI...

Yes, through a native HDMI port or DVI port with the ATI branded DVI -> HDMI adapters

Do you actually use a nv card at all?

reference bfg gtx 280, reference evga gtx 285, reference asus gtx 285 all can pass audio through dvi with dvi-hdmi adapters + connect to motherboard S/PDIF OUT 2 pins.

all tested on asus p6t x58 win 7 rtm 64bit / gaga x48-dq6 vista 64bit.

there are two things need to mention:
1. S/PDIF OUT 2pins only works if you connect in the correct direction. if it doesn't output audio. just turn off pc and flip around.
2. on my win 7 + p6t, i need to select digital audio (HDMI) to output sound.
on vista 64bit + x48, i need to select digital audio (S/PDIF) to output sound.

depend on your setup/os/driver, you probably need to see which one works on yours...

Even those nv video cards that have native hdmi ports, hdmi audio also pass through dvi port with the hdmi adapter(at least on both of my cards). I have msi passive 9400gt & 9500gt. both can pass audio through DVI port with adpater + connect to S/PDIF OUT port on motherboard.

appearently, S/PDIF input 2 pins port on those msi card are wired in the opposite direction than those refence gtx280/285. in order to make audio work on those MSI cards, you need to flip your connector when you connect to motherboard S/PDIF OUTPUT 2 pins.

at the end, unless your video card vendor really suck, you should be able to pass audio through dvi with the hdmi connector + S/PDIF wire.

Nvidia cards being able to pass audio through the DVI port through a DVI -> HDMI adapter into an HDMI cable is news to me. I did a lot of research concerning audio output through the video card when I was thinking about building an HTPC and I never saw mention of that. Would have been useful info to have

Hello Tj,
I specifically joined to help you with your problem. I had the same problem. I had the SPDIF cable connected to my video card (asus p6t MB and BFG gtx 285) and received no sound through my hdmi cable (video card DVI output to hdmi adaptor to monitor). I found your post looking for a solution to mine.

Here is the problem, you actually have TWO main sound sources (you can verify this by looking at dxdiag). The primary sound source was HDA sound, the secondary is SPDIF. My testing of dxdiag, only the analog (HDA) speakers worked, no sound out of SPDIF to video card. coaxal output on the motherboard also worked.

There is no easy utility to use the sound, but(!) I found if you go to sounds (control panel), you can choose which audio source will be primary. I switched it from HDA to SPDIF and voila, I received sound through my soundcard (DVI to hdmi adaptor). THe 5.1 analog speaker outputs stopped working. Using dxdiag, I verified this (spdif now works, hda doesnt).

So it seems with the asus MB, its an either/or audio source format. The HDA control panel and sound control panel did NOT have this information or allow you to switch.
(I'm using xp, waiting for win7 to show up) ONLY in the sound (where you can choose the sound for events) was the option given. I can freely swap between them using only that option.

I've been running my X-Fi through the primary GTX 280 in my SLI setup for a while now. It's connected to my 37" Samsung via DVI to HDMI. The sound is perfect.

What else would be the use of the SPDIF pass though port on the GTX 200 series cards? All GTX 200 series cards I have seen only have DVI + S-Video.

Interesting to note you have a sound card, not onboard sound. After playing with my configuration, I've come to realize the SPDIF from motherboard to video card is outputing 2.1 digital sound. Playing blu-ray disks results in 2.1 sound, not 5.1

Going analog (my speakers can take 6 channel analog/optical/coax), I get full speaker coverage. Googling it, seems this is standard, as SPDIF outputs in 2.1 sound, or passes a digital signal. For some reason, the blu ray soundtrack is not being passed but broken down into 2.1 sound. I didnt check the coaxal connection (audio source connection, its paired to the 6 channel analog source), since I'll stick with the 6 channel sound to my speakers.

So, asus 6ptv2 and bfg 285 gtx, using SPDIF board to vid card, and hdmi adapter gives 2.1 sound. In case anyone else wants to try this and find out they are not getting 5.1

From what I read, using a soundcard, it works fine.

If you're trying to get sound over HDMI to your TV, then you're probably also using your TV's speakers. Most TV's as far as I know only have stereo sound, so I wouldn't think this would be a problem for a lot of people, but interesting nevertheless.

You'd just have to configure your Blu-ray software to pass though or compress it into standard DD or DTS so that it can be passed over SPDIF to your videocard, as HD audio formats require a native HDMI for digital output. In other cases such as with games you'd a sound device which supports such compression to pass to your videocard. However, you are better off just using analog connections with a good sound device and quality cables to get uncompressed surround sound from all sources since you have that option on your receiver.

Also, someone above had claimed ATI HDMI audio output requires a special adapter, but in fact it will work with any DVI to HDMI adapter as HDMI audio is merged into the video signal rather than carried on separate wires.
