Audio question

Im gonna be using the K8N Neo Platinum motherboard which comes with 7.1 channel audio codec RealTek ALC850 and I was wondering how good this is. I plan to use the Logitech Z-5300 and I wanted to know if I should buy a seperate audio card or not.

I'd get a seperate card but I guess it depends on your definition of what's good enough.

Give it a try. see if you like the way movies and music sound. See how games sound.

the on board audio has been pretty good lately...

I second CSx2011's suggestion. I'm quite happy with my mobo's onboard sound. Was worried at first, but after some testing I found it to be surprisingly good. So give it a test and see what it's like. I think it will probably sound fine.

Or get a sound card and compare the onboard sound to the separate sound cards. If you can't tell the difference, then return the sound card.

A third vote for give it a try. Before I built my latest system I was using a TB Santa Cruz card. When I built my new one I decided to see if the onboard audio on the A7N8X-E (using the analog realtec audio w/ Logitech Z640 speakers) would be sufficient. I'm no audiophile by any means so it sounds good enough to me in everything (DVDs, games, a little music) I use it for. The only problem I had recently was with Doom 3. Downloading a different driver fixed the problem. I say give it a try....the worst that could happen is you have to buy a sound card.

The integrated sound has gotten quite good. That is largely why the add-on audio card business has become such a joke with CL about the only one left with any market share - and I won't buy anymore CL since they bought (stole) Aureal's tech and then shelved it. "Good-enough" is always the enemy of better.
. Even the latest Turtle Beach cards are just chipset reference designs at egregious prices - see the review on http://www.sudhian.com/ . If you decide your integrated sound is inadequate, Philips is supposed to be coming out with something that might be worth watching for as several models of their current/discontinued "Edge" series were much better than average. And they are about the only one other than CL that does their own chipsets.
