In today's (Fri Dec 20) San Jose Mercury News ... the Fry's ad has the AMD Athlon XP 2200+ RETAIL BOXED CPU and ECS K7S5A motherboard for $169.99. I just checked their San Jose Store (Brokaw Rd) and see that their price for the CPU by itself is $179.99.
They also listed a P4 2.4 GHz @ 533 FSB CPU & ECS board for $199.99 ... again that CPU sells for $219.99
Crazy ...

I would be cautious about buying a cpu from fry's that is not retail.
They have a terrible history of selling defective cpu's and refusing to replace them.
I have personaly seen this happen more than a dozen times.
OEM and bad cpu, frys or intel/amd wont help you.
Retail and bad cpu, frys will refer you to amd/intel for a replacement.

So even though they have a 15 day warranty on the cpu, you say they will tell you to blow...

I meant 15 day return policy. I guess that is what credit cards are for, huh.

That way you can tell them to blow!

Actually ... Fry's is a"distributor" for both Intel and AMD. They will handle/cover the 3 year warranty on ALL Retail Boxed CPUs that are purcahsed through them. There is no "hand off" to the vendor (Intel/AMD)

The product they are selling in today's ad is RETAIL BOXED.

I dunno why ur getting those problems, but I have never experience it once, u get 15 days, u dont like it bring it back, and no restocking fee. Plus u're getting a Retail BOXED cpu, which has never been open.

I bought a 256mb CF card from them, the generic 1 which they cover warranty themselves for 1 year, it worked for my digicam before, but all of a sudden after 3 months it stop working. brought it to fry's, using the USB CF Reader, it read it fine, just won't read it on my digicam, they gave me refund anyways, even though they wouldn't gimme cash back, but i got store credit, which is fine with me.

He did say his recomedation was for BARE CPU's, Not retail... That said, I've never had a problem buying CPU's from FRY's out of a TRAY. I have heard that people had problems when buying bare CPU's when they are out of stock. I guess they just keep giving you the older that others have turned in after some kid had previously tested good. Anyway if that is happening. Do NOT except it, And ask for a Full Refund and buy elsewhere. But if they have 10K CPU's in a trays then usually it's not an issue.

Now buying generic memory from frys is a bigger isue ... ONE who knows who made it. TWO it's Generic the lowest grade you can get. I've had ram go bad, taken it back @ the 10 day got a new one. BAD as well, didn't have time to bring it back and well, it's still sitting at my house 128MEGS of DDR 133 RAM. Dunno, I tried contacting the company they won't return my e-mails. So, there you have it... I guess the best thing to do with any of FRYS bad generic crap is "DON'T" it's like going to the junk yard. I'd rather just get it from crucial and forget about it.... RAM is hard enough to troubleshoot by itself. And saving 20-50 bucks isn't worth my time and can and will byte you!

They need to part a better board with them though. I already have enough K7S5A's They're reliable and cheap, that's mainly it.

If you are not in a hurry, Fry's has had the K7S5A + XP2000BARE = $99 about 3 times in the last few weeks. I am in Houston and they still have a ton of these products. I would not be surprised if it is available in all Fry's stores again shortly.

Anyway, the board and CPU go for about $130 shipped with a RETAIL CPU, depending on where you order. I personally see this as very cold. No threadcrap intended.

BTW, I saw the K7S5A + XP2000BARE = $99 so many times where I live, I finally picked on up for someone last week. I will be building it tonight, probably. About to go get some Crucial PC2100 from BB.

Googlegear = 2000+ RETAIL = $85 shipped
+
Newegg = K7S5A = $52 shipped
= $137
(Newegg = 2000+ RETAIL = $91 shipped)

EDIT... The P4 retail deal comes out to about saving $40 on the mainboard vs buying online, then minus your tax, if any, from that for final savings.

The P4 is the better deal, obviously, unless you want an Athlon, of course.

Have a good holiday everyone!

Ummmmm no.

Newegg 2200 XP + retail = $166.00
Newegg = K7S5A = $52 shipped
= $218.00

I think that makes this a nice deal. About $50.... nice.

I got the combo, I think the deal is still good till the 24th.

The nice thing about the 2200 retail cpu is that it's a tbred core and the HSF that's bundled is fairly large and quiet.

They also have a duron 1.3 retail/ecs for 80 bux

That board doesn't have SDRAM slots though right? I'm so broke, I can't afford new ram.

Oh, I see what 'the problem is now.

In the paper it has, in big bold letters, "XP 2000+".
Underneath, in smaller, normal printing, it has "XP 2200+".

So, what 'I' originally read, and wrote, was correct, except for the fact that if they give a person an 'XP 2200+', of course, it is a better deal.

Sooooo, I guess, for that price, Fry's has been giving people the XP 2200+ in the bundle? I know that would be the only way anyone should buy that bundle.

Frys will not do shat for you with a bad OEM CPU.
I am contesting the charge with my CC company and am going to win, they sold defective merchandise and have a history of this, cant really lose.
I took the bad CPU back within the 15 day period, they knew it was a bad CPU but wouldnt do anything about it but tell me to contact AMD. AMD will not handle bad OEM's unless they are bought directly from AMD, no if's and's or but's about it.

Never have had anything good to say about Frys, never will.

I returned a retail XP 2000+ a while back. The cpu just wouldn't boot when they tested it at Fry's. They didn't give me any crap about returning it.

You told them you bought a cpu that was defective, and they didn't take it back within 15 days? Thats odd, never had a problem with that policy, they've always been really good as long as it was within the time frame.
