Dyed in the wool baseball fan? You'll love this.

It's a NYT (free sub) link. Scroll down past the pic to the vid. Don't know if you need to be subscribed (again, free) to view the link or the vid, but it's worth it if you love the history of baseball, which has been berry, berry good to me.

And . . .

GO PHILLIES!

Apparently it's the only film of the Babe. That is an incredible find. Thanks for the link!

PS: Go Phillies!

That's really cool, I'd love to see the video but it appears to be unavailable from the site right now......

It's hard to believe how little in-game film exists of *any* pre-war players. Most of the decent stuff comes from spectators sitting in the stands. Pro shot footage is just pitiful. From what I can tell, at some of the early World Series, it was enough of a news event that they would set up a big movie camera, film a little bit, and show it in theaters as part of a newsreel. But most of what they shot seemed to be players walking around the field before the game and posing for press photos, and maybe a few at-bats, zoomed in on the batter and shooting from a side angle with the press photographers.

It's too bad they didn't have the foresight to get some of the greats in action, to see pitching motions, fielding, running, etc. Seeing Ruth in the field is very cool, even if he's just standing there.

the footage of his "called shot" at Wrigley is rather well known. when you watch it, it appears that he's actually flashing the pitcher two fingers. I think the count was 0-2 or something, and he was likely sending a signal to the pitcher that he only has two more chances to throw a real pitch, or something like that.

Still taunting, but not likely pointing out of the stands to show that he's gonna knock the next one out.

Excerpts:

It is Babe Ruth, but maybe not Lou Gehrig. It is probably 1928. And it may just be Sept. 9, part of a doubleheader against the Philadelphia Athletics at Yankee Stadium, rather than an October World Series game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Two college professors separately proposed using the shadows of the flag poles (seen on the field) to determine the position of the sun and, with some serious mathematics, the date of the game. Others noted what appears to be a dirigible in the background over the Bronx and suggested locating dirigible flight schedules. Many shared their knowledge of box scores, uniform designs and Yankee Stadium history, and took stabs at various dates and opposing teams.

But none gave it the full scrub like Keith Olbermann, the MSNBC broadcaster and baseball blogger, and Tom Shieber, a senior curator at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y.

The two, working separately, came up with the same conclusion. They believe that the game in question took place on Sunday, Sept. 9, 1928. Probably.

Lots of interesting stuff in the full article.
