Like someone said before, the space & rocket center in Huntsville is ok. I think they have different kinds of tours and an IMAX theater.

Oh, I meant an IMAX space documentary type thing. I don't know how IMAX theaters work since I've never been to one outside of the Space and Rocket Center, but they have space documentaries. They used to have a really cool one about astronaut training... I don't know what they show now. It's not like a general theater.

The Fish Market is a great place for lunch if you work in the UAB area, but it's nothing to go out of your way to see IMO.

Niki's West is a great place for lunch although not in the greatest area of town. It's a perennial favorite in any national 'meat and three' list.

You would have to give me your address, directions, phone number, etc for that. 😛

Not much to do there

It was an experience 🙂

If I had to live in that region of the country I'd rather live in parts of TX or Atlanta.

We're very glad to be home!!!

Speaking with Millennium on the phone was cool, very nice guy.

Did you ever get out of the downtown and Bessemer areas? I know that's where you originally said you were going to be most of the time. No offense to anyone in those areas (Millenium grew up not too far from from Bessemer I think) but for the most part downtown is dead and Bessemer itself is not exactly a showcase suburb for the Birmingham area.

I've lived in Birmingham for most of my life. I've heard it summed up best by the following statement: "It's a great place to live, but you wouldn't want to visit there." I agree. With the exception of hot, muggy summers (this last one was great actually) the weather here rocks, especially in the fall. The cost of living is cheap allowing a lot of people to live in very nice areas for very reasonable rates (the entire 'Over the Mountain' area is like this.) We've got all the conveniences of super metropolitan areas without most of the drawbacks.

Unfortunately, there's not much in terms of touristy attractions here though. It's mostly a business town with lots of major banks, public utilities and industrial centers based out of here. Off the top of my head, things I'd recommend to visitors:

-Mercedes-Benz plant tour: About 15 minute drive from Bessemer. I still haven't done it but it's supposedly pretty cool.

-Museum of Art: It's not huge, but it's nice and FREE (Rossman keyword.)

-Barber Motorsports Park: About 15/20 minute drive from Hoover area; BEAUTIFUL road course that many consider to be the best in the US and one of the best in the world. Don't think there's anything other than the regular Porsche Driving School going on out there this weekend though.

If Alabama was playing better I'd suggest heading out to Tuscaloosa to take in some Southern football tailgating; people outside the SEC THINK they know what they're in for, but don't really understand until you see it firsthand. You don't even have to go to the game to have a good time. Tons of great golf courses to choose from too, but I doubt you're bringing your clubs.

For shopping, The Summit and the Galleria are the places to go. For bars/clubs, Five Points South is still the biggest area.

Food:

LUNCH PLACES
-Firehouse Subs is a good lunch pick. This regional chain blows Quiznos away IMO.
-Chappy's is another good place to eat a good, cheap lunch.
-Bert's on the Bluff is a prototypical 'meat and three' but tucked away in a residential area.
-Guthrie's is great for coronary specials (chicken fingers, fries and garlic buttered toast)

DINNER PLACES
-Dreamland is a staple always recommended to visitors.
-Wings is a good, local sports bar/restaurant chain with several locations in town.
-The entire Highway 280 area (from the Summit to Inverness) is LOADED with restaurant choices.
-Most of the swankiest restaurants are in Mtn. Brook, Homewood and Southside.

Birmingham Restaurant Guide

Whoever hasn't been to Birmingham, listen to this guy. He knows what he's talking about. I can vouch for him because I lived there for six years and have been visiting relatives over the summer for the past 10 years. Hell, I lived in that residential area that Berts on the Bluff resteraunt was...within walking distance. Birmingham is a great place to live and work, but like he said, if you are just visiting, then you may not understand why it is such a great place. Oh, btw...the best parts of "Birmingham" are around in the smaller cities like Hoover, Mtn. Brook, or Vestavia Hills. Birmingham does have a lot of great places, so dont judge it as a whole based on just one area. 🙂

We went everywhere, the good and bad parts of B'ham. Went as far north (south?) as Hoover and in the other direction.

I would have liked to see southside B'ham but it was a short trip.
