You'd have to install it once to create the bootable media, but it can be uninstalled after that. For basic imaging, you can do everything you need to do from the bootable CD.
Thanks to for his post in the Free Stuff forum for a free copy of Acronis True Image 10 Personal Edition. This is the full version, not a demo. They have a newer version, True Image 2009, but if this works for your needs, the price is right.
