Bad Credit at 17?

This is just a story of my experience dealing with IBM, scroll down to the bottom if you don't want to read it and just want to read my main question.

I bought a 21" monitor from IBM. This monitor is supposedly the best 21" there is, besides the sony GDMF520, costing $750, which is $100-200 more than any other 21" out.

The quality? It sucks, definately not even on par to a $500 monitor. Blurry here and there, and the only way to fix is to dim it down to sub shadowmask brightness levels.

I got several RMAs from IBM, hoping to resolve the issue. Though they keep sending me monitors with the same problems, some being worse than others. I went through 4 monitors from IBM. I decided I didn't want them to just send me another crappy refurb, hoping the problem will be gone. I asked them to escalate me to higher support, to see if there's anymore they could do to resolve my issue(sending me a new one, instead of a defect refurb, or giving me a refund). The techs at IBM themselves reported this problem! The tech esclated me again, since they claimed they have no power to do anything. So I wait a week for the manager of IBM tech support, and she finally calls me and tells me she has no power to do anything either, and will escalate me again to higher tech support. After being escalated the 4th time, I am finally led to someone that could do something. It took two weeks to get a hold of him, because he would not pick up the phone, and would not respond to my message on his answering machine. He denies seeing the problem, and ask me to send pictures. I send pictures of my problems, and now he ignores my email for over a month.

Now I get pretty fed up, I decide to not send one monitor back. I know they are probably going to bill me soon if I fail to send it back. They don't have anything more than my name and my address though. So my main question is, could they give me bad credit if I don't pay/return the monitor if I'm only 17?

If they want to find you they will. I would suggest writing letters to complain about the product and service you have recieved to thier corporate offices. You may make out with a better product.

The squeaky wheel gets the greasing.

Why would you keep aa extra monitor your unhappy with any way?

So this one report will give me a bad credit for the next decade?

I'm just thinking if I can't get one good monitor, I'll have two bad monitors.

Thanks DaWhim, I submitted my letter with PlanetFeedback. I hope they take action.

MrDudeMan... It's annoying to be cheated out $750. At least I get my moneys worth more.

Do they have a credit card on file? Do they have your social security number somehow?

If not, then they can bill you all they want, but if you don't pay, I don't think they have much recourse other than taking you to court. It's like if you join BMG or Columbia House, order a bunch of crap and then just not pay them it won't end up on your credit report.

I'm not a professional, however, this has just been my observation of others' experiences.

Dude, you are a minor.

You can legally dispute any contract you enter into upto the age of 18.

There is nothing they can do to you.

Yeah they don't have my social security number or my credit card(don't have one anyways). So it won't go on my credit report?

They can find you based on your name and address alone, no need for SSN, then the collection notice will go into your credit report. Those collection agencies are expert on destroying someone credits, and then offer something to work around (something like a payment plan), but the damage is already done.

But collections can only put something on your credit report IF they have your social security. And in this case, it's something the guy has already paid for. No line of credit is even involved.

virtualgames0, this will not go on your credit report. Why? They call it a credit report for a reason. You bought this monitor straight out, there was no line of credit given by anyone. That alone makes this thread worthless. Second, you are 17. This is another sign that no credit was given. You can get no legal credit of any kind till you're atleast 18.

Now, whether they'll come after you or not for the monitor is another question .

No one has asked yet... How did YOU pay for the monitor? You're 17, you cant possibly have your *own* credit card. (You may have one that mommy and daddy gave you with your name on it, but it's their card)

yeah was wondering that myself. HOW did he get the monitor if all they have is his name and address? I don't think we are getting the full or honest story.

Why don't you just try and make it right instead of wasting time and playing kids games ? I realize they are not returning your messages yet, but what you're doing is not productive and can lead to financial trouble. Why risk all that just to "get even" with a company that can afford losing a single monitor ?

No, they won't give you bad credit over this. Unless they pulled your credit report and have your SSN in regards to this transaction they can't do anything about your credit.

BTW, keeping a second bad one to punish them is exceedingly stupid.

If that guy won't answer your calls you simply call different people.

If you still can't get any love you dispute with a credit card, assuming that your parents let you use theirs to buy it.

Otherwise I"m not sure what you do, but you've just committed theft, and that's a bad idea. This isn't grade school, and when somebody is "dicking around" like these guys are you can't simply keep another monitor, slash their tires, toilet paper their house, etc. to get even.

no... name, address is all they need. And Im willing to bet they have more than that on him already. (I work in a collection law firm).

What I dont get is that you bought something, decided you dont like the quality and want your money back? Do they have a money back gaurantee? What are the stipulations of the sale?

Give old Sam Palmisano a phone call.

I find it best to go straight to the cop rather then deal with Customer No-service. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the 21" monitor...(who wants oil nowadays)

Not only could you get bad credit, but you could also get a knock on your door from the police if you try to "buy" something without paying for it. Regardless of how bad the monitor is, you have to return it if you don't want to pay for it. The best that can happen is that you return it for a full refund and be done with them. If they won't do that, write a letter to corporate complaining of your experience; especially how you used to trust that IBM made good products.

Yeah, the last thing you should worry about is your credit. If you did this IBM, could easily file both fraud and theft charges against you.
