Bad PS - or what?

My son just finished building his first PC from scratch (using all new components). When he hit the power button, both the CPU fan and chassis fans start to spin for an instant, but then stop after just a couple of revs. The motherboard's standby light is on, but the system is dead. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Put the board outside the case and retest (the original cardboard box works wonder).

Also reseat all connectors. Verify that all power plugs (including 4-pin if available) are connected.

If it's a PSU that came with the chassis, just forget about the "spectacular performance" part. I had to upgrade my PSU because the original was trash. After my mobo died, I never used it again. Actually, I used up more power than what my PSU would have normally handle, but they still suck.

No, the PSU is an Enermax in the range of 400+ Watts.

I'd say it most likely a cabling problem. Have him double check those. Better yet, just disconnect all drives (including floppy) and see if it POSTs. Then hook one at a time.

Also double check that the CPU HS fan is on the right mobo header.
