Bad sectors on IBM 75GXP

I've developed some bad sectors on my 45GB IBM 75GXP. IBM tech support says I should run their drive fitness test and erase the drive. That will fix the errors because they are actually caused by data corruption from windows shutting down before the cache is written to disk.

I know lots of people have had 75gxp problems. Has this ever fixed things for anyone? I've always heard, if you have bad sectors, replace the drive - period.

I thought most of the problems were with the 45gig 75GXP? Have you tried what the IBM ppl said? If that doesn't work. Get another HD.

There is a shut down patch at windows update at microsoft for this problem but you will have to format your drive first.Heres the web page for the patch http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/default.htm

The IBM drives have problems in both startup and in shutdown. The best known of the problems is that Windows shuts down before the large drive cache is flushed to the HD. The patch at MS solves this by delaying shutdown -- in most, but not all, cases. Lots of us have encountered the startup problem in which the system begins a boot but the drive is not ready in time and the system hangs just before the single beep. The delay in some BIOS's will work, but on my ABIT BE6 II it doesn't so almost every time I boot up, I must hold the power switch closed until the system shuts down and then immediately -- while the drive is still spinning -- press the switch again to reboot. It works every time on that second start. IBM should do something about the incompatibility they built in between their drives and the most widely used OS's.

I had the same problem, and got the same instructions from IBM. Using the Fitness Test thing, I did a low level format and things have been fine since then. No problems.

As far as I can tell, there is no shut down patch for Windows 2000 and XP.

I haven't tried erasing the disk yet because what happens if it works ok for another year or so? Then I need to back up and erase the whole drive again. Also, the drive might not be under warranty anymore.

If I just send it back, might they just send me one of the newer drives that have this problem fixed?

only certain batches

They will send you a fixed used one if you RMA your current drive.

My 30gig 75GXP died shortly after repairing some bad sectors.

MAy 2001, is this good or bad? It's a refurb drive.

Does the patch applies to Win98se?? I've just installed everything into this drive not long after I got the RMA.

Yes it's for windows 98se. It will solve your problems.
