People who don't have a taste for whiskey can be turned without resorting to flavored whiskeys. Cocktails on the sweeter or sour side starting with 80 proof whiskey are the gateway drugs to the brown liquor universe. My husband used to not like whiskey and after many manhattans, old fashioneds, and whiskey sours now turns his nose up at non-cask strength lol.
I agree that those are good gateways to cask strength alcohol. I'm not sure that there is much actual difference between a flavored whiskey and a whiskey cocktail. Both dilute the whiskey and then add other flavors. The rest is mostly psychological at that point.

I am defending Screwball simply since no one else is. Not that I would drink it myself.

With cocktails you can ratchet up the proof over time which is what I did and move into more spirit forward versions. From there the leap to drinking it neat is not so great.

I'm a big fan of barrel aged beer. Second favorite type after Belgium beer which doesn't get a ton of love in the US. Fortunately we have two pretty decent breweries barrel aged that in Michigan: Founders and New Holland. Not as great as the likes of Side Project or Bottle Logic but good local(ish) options
I wish Founders would bring back the Dankwood IPA, I loved that stuff. New Holland are the ones that got me into the whole thing in the first place when I chanced across Dragon's Milk on tap at a Yard House.
Not interested in the two mentioned but I used to occasionally get Bushmill's Red Bush. Irish Whiskey aged in bourbon barrels.
That sounds pretty appealing too, I've had some Jameson that was aged in different barrels and appreciated it.
