Basic Mobo install

I'm not really sure about the whole thing but here it goes.

I thought I knew how to install a comp but appearently not. I got myself a 300W atx box and mounted a new/antic Asus P2L97 (A P2 mobo with 440LX) in it. Plugged in the power connector on the mobo and inserted a grx card. When I insert the power cord the comp starts immediately. And blank screen.

I'm pussled. I've got 2 of the mobo and both work just as bad. Tested the power supply on my other comp (Duron) with no problems. Tried with 3 different grx cards, Matrox Millenium PCI, Asus TNT2 Ultra AGP, Asus Geforce SDR AGP.

Tried both with and without proc and mem. Every component is tested on my primary system except the mobos.

Are you sure you are connecting the ATX power switch connector to the motherboard correctly and the power switch in the case is not stuck/broken? Something must be shorting the 2 pins on the switch header together, or the power button on the case is stuck, otherwise the machine wouldn't start at all.

make sure the cpu is seated properly in it's slot

The current issue of Computershopper has an article on putting together a PC. When they got to the case they found that the manufacturer had mislabled the reset switch wire with the ATX power on/off switch.............Greg

As far as I can see the pins on the mobo is not shorted and it starts even without me plugging in the case buttons. And I can only insert the power connector in one direction since it has a gazillion guides.

Shouldn't it do a POST without cpu?

AFAIK your system will not post w/o a processor.
