Having just watched the new trailer, I just don't get casting Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. In the trailer he sounds like he hasn't even hit puberty.

yup.. lex as a kid?!
while bruce wayne looks like he's in his 50s with all that grey hair?

so basically in this justice league movie arc universe, batman came first.
then he retired.
then superman came along.
and batman went back into action because of him.

and yeah about why fight batman hand to hand?
just nail him from a mile away using heat vision.

Believe it or not, but he and Cavill are about the same age. In the comics there are stories where Lex and Clark grew up together. Physically he is a small guy, but Lex is more about his brains than braun. They can always have him make his power armor if for some reason he needs to fight someone.

I have a feeling I'm going to hate Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. The trailer makes him look whiny and petulant, like a child that had it's toy taken from him.

...so you're saying he should have been cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman?

I don't totally understand how Jesse Eisenberg has become such a respected, prolific actor. I guess he made sense as Mark Zuckerberg (though I felt The Social Network was wildly overrated), but in general he comes off as a less-charming, unfunny Michael Cera. I would think he'd be nothing but maddening as Lex Luthor. Actually, had Michael Shannon not played Zod in Man of Steel, I think he could be good, though I guess he's too old.

Even Kevin Spacey was a better Lex than Eisenberg. From the comics and prior movies...just that sinister darkness feels missing. The trailer makes him come off as "oh I can be evil?". (I don't know when Lex "flips" from good to bad from the comics, so enlighten me if I'm being naive)

Michael Shannon? You mean Bryan Cranston. Say my name, Superman! I am the one who plots first!

I would hope Cranston would stay out of this. Frankly I not only don't trust Zach Snyder to make this movie good, I have every confidence he will make it a POS. Given that Godzilla was something of a disappointment, I'd rather not see the wonderful Bryan Cranston in another crummy action movie.

We haven't seen much from the trailer, so it would be hard to compare it to Spacey. Spacey wasnt bad, but thats was essentially the same real estate baron Lex that Hackman was doing. I'm used to Lex being portrayed as confident, serious, and menacing like he was in JLU.

I think traditionally Lex turned bad when he lost his hair. lol

What an odd claim to make, being that neither you nor anyone else has seen this, yet.

"Heath Ledger as the Joker?? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?! D:" Remember when the internet lost its collective shit over that casting news?

yeah.

Why not? Snyder made what is arguably the best Superhero film to date: The Watchmen, and another in the top 3 or 5 with Man of Steel.

I'd say he has the chops for it. My only concern is that this looks way too cluttered with characters, plots, and random stuff happening. (Why Avengers movies are generally rather forgettable: lots of stuff constantly happening; you leave the theater numb and having forgotten what you were doing the previous 3 hours).

A casual viewer here who grew up with typical the exposure of Superman & Batman. Questions:

Why is Superman so weak? This whole Superman vs Batman baffles me. Batman is a mere mortal and Superman can just fart in his general direction to absolutely obliterate Batman, stupid mechanic suit or not.

In the trailer, by the time Batman even thinks about raising his leg to initiate a kick, Superman could spin around the earth 4 times, go eat a breakfast, sleep with Lois Lane, then counterpunch Batman to a pulp.

Is there an 'legit' comic-backed reason behind Superman's apparent weakness or it's just movies being movies?

Nailed it.

I think if Eisenberg can blend his character from Night Moves with one of the two characters he played in The Double and throw in some of his Zuckerberg from The Social Network, that could make for a great Luthor.

I don't agree with that. It only takes a moment to see the direction they took the character. I may not ultimately like Leto's Joker in Suicide Squad, but in 5 seconds of the teaser trailer, you can tell the character he's portraying is something resembling "The Joker".

I love Watchmen, but it's not a superhero movie, IMO.

Yeah, I think it is much more than that--but they are all Superheroes if nothing else. It's neither the Marvel style fantasy, fun, and yuk-yuk with endless digital effects; or the DC hyper-realistic brooding, ultra depressing, lacking in humor type flick, but it's a bit of both.

It gathers elements of noir, superhero, golden-age epic story arcs, action.

It's also the only team-based superhero flick that is any good. It's not messy, it doesn't toss in endless villains and endless plots and endless stupid effects and action that has, essentially zero stakes (these people in Watchmen can, and certainly do, die...unlike all the cartoon gods in Avengers, for example).

well, I'm referring to Mark Zuckerberg as Luthor, here...but as for this new Joker, that is the same thing that happened with Ledger.

His Joker was, at the time, "something resembling the Joker." It was Nolan's Joker, and Ledger's Joker. He wasn't a type of Joker that had been seen before. But within months, every nerd and all their stuffed animal friends had decided that he was, now, the definitive Joker. Or something like that.

I still think Jack is best.

If it's like the Batman Returns comics, then Superman is being sent by the govt to arrest, not kill, batman. So, Supes isn't going all out. Plus, Batman has kryptonite in the comics, so that levels things a bit.

Superman is weaker at night. His powers come from the sun. Also, Superman never strikes to kill.

Not to mention that in that story Superman hadn't fully recovered from being at the center of nuclear explosion from a soviet missile that he diverted from a war zone.

The Dark Knight Returns was published in 1986 and it was hard to imagine at the time that the U.S.S.R. would collapse unless you were privy to CIA research on them.

Dr. Manhattan could show up in the middle of the fight and disintegrate them both and combine them into a SuperBat, then get bored and pop off to another galaxie...

I'm just saying

So we're still ignoring the eye black that disappears whenever batman takes off his mask? It's clear as fucking day... you can see it in every mask he has ever worn, but his mask is ripped off and his whole face is white as can be. I know, I know... super hero movie involving an alien that shoots lasers out of his eyes. It's just silly to have such discontinuity already in a 30 second trailer.
