I am looking for a very high-end video card for my new comp.

I am deciding between the new ATI X800 (Either Pro or XT) and the GeForce 6800 Ultra

Which one would be better?

I think the X800XT is the fastest of those. Though the 6800 Ultra and the XT are close.

instead of posting a thread that has no purpose other than to incite flames why not search around the video forum as this has been done to death.

I hate the fact that people keep pointing out the same thing. The 6800Ultra uses about 20 more watts than the X800XT. It is a two slot cooling but it definately pays off when the video card runs ~50C whereas the X800XT runs around 70-80C. Dont get me wrong the X800XT is an awesome card, but people just keep pointing out the same stupid things over and over.

The uses less power argument really is getting old. Power difference is in the 10-20W range. As far as two slot, unless this is for a SFF computer that really shouldn't be much of an issue. All I can say really is read the reviews. They will offer a lot more than most of the people here.

I would make your choices between the Geforce 6800 GT. and the Radeon X800 Pro, they have the same price range.

As of right now the 6800 GT is faster, but I would wait for official Nvidia drivers, as well as the new 4.7 ATI drivers. You can make a choice based on those.

Of course, if space and power is limited, the X800 Pro could suite your needs. It's still fast, just a little slower than the GT.

The 6800U only runs at 50C load? If thats true that means the fan wouldn't need to spin up as much as the X800XT thus making it quieter then an XT. If thats true, Im gettin an 6800U.

DITTO- I had both a 6800 Ultra and a X800Pro. The X800Pro went back to the store yesterday. The image quality between the 2 cards are now a non-issue. Nvidia has done a great job of catching up to ATI's color vibrance IMHO. I don't see why anyone would consider ATI when the cards are at the same price level. Why not pay the same and get PS 3.0? Nvidia has finally come out with a good product that they should be proud of.

The 6800 Ultra is quiter then the XT. Nvidia have introduced new fan technology, which keep the noise below 28db i believe.

From the Nvidia website:

High performance Air surround Fan Air surround technique can lead the air flow every side of the board.

That makes the Fan more efficient.

Filter on Fan design can provide better protection on Fansink and reduce dust. Also extend its life-span.

Ultra Silent design with lower than 28dB. Say goodbye to annoying noise.

I believe I've read the opposite in a review, but the difference shouldn't be too great. I'd go for the 6800U if it has dual DVI, as otherwise it seems pretty comparable.

lol, you have some issues with causation. the 6800u runs cooler becuase the fan is spining faster, as well as the larger heatsink.
