I'm seriously thinking this is the worst 'major' release of the decade so far. It's quite amazingly bad in almost every respect. There's a lot less going on, but the graphics are STILL a big step down from even BF3, and BF4 looks miles better (even though BF3 played better and was more stable than BF4).
EA needs to be careful with the BF brand, for real. They're well on their way to killing it.
Brief history (IMHO)
BF1942 : Amazing game. Not perfect, but super ambitious, and fun, lots of depth. Loved being able to play with bots.
BF1942 mod : Desert Combat : One of the most amazing mods of all time, and really set the stage for the future. For a community mod, this is spectacular work.
BF Vietnam : Disappointing, but wasn't truly horrible. Just mediocre.
BF2 : Boom, baby. Balance issues aside, it really raised the bar in so many areas. Just a fantastic title. No, the gun mechanics weren't perfect, and a pro in a jet could go 100-0 for 100 rounds in a row, but there was so much magic here.
BF2142 : I never got into this, but it did have a lot of dedicated fans that swore on it's quality, so I'll take their word for it.
BFBC1 : Never played it, so I have no idea.
BFBC2 : Liked it a lot, but felt the scope didn't live up to BF2. Pretty awesome step up in engine quality for sure.
BF3 : One of my favorite FPS of all time. No, definitely not perfect, but I had countless hours of fun with this one. I even grew to like Origin+Battlelog system, and had very very few issues ever with it.
BF4 : Meh. I don't hate it per se, but the vehicles feel sluggish/crappy to me. I also had hordes of technical problems until I literally wiped a spare SSD and ran it on 8.1 (even though 100s of other games worked flawlessly on the W7 Pro load, go figure). I can't put my finger on what it is, but it's just not FUN to me.
BF : HL : The worst FPS I've played perhaps ever (major publishers).
