I feel like this site is a bunch of hipsters sitting around fellating themselves to the scents of toffee, figs and old leather.

Discuss.

Agreed. Site suffers the same fate of any other enthusiast site; the more of an enthusiast they are, the more cynical and conceited they become in their taste.

Half the reviews are fine. The other half can only be satisfied by the most quirky and esoteric beer they can find and will rate anything else a 2/5.

No matter how bad beer snobs can be, art snobs, wine snobs and audiophiles are 1000 times worse.

along with making 'Pizza' a gourmet item.

They secretly enjoy shirley temples and spritzers when home alone away from other men.

I don't drink much beer anymore, consuming wine primarily. :\

I like how it's not pretentious to be a wine snob....because wine snobs are inherently pretentious. Yet a beer snob is looked down upon.

Wine snobs are also looked down upon. Beer was never supposed to be the same thing.

I hear from wine "experts" that think $4-6 bottles are still great because they read this nearly 20 years ago:

IT WAS PUBLISHED IN 1996! My salary in 1996 was more than the 2012 average wage index today which was about when I bought this book.

I don't drink much wine, I buy a lot of it though. Personally some tequila (rarely) and Michelob Ultra is all I need to be happy.

LOL.

We all post here to show off in some way or another. I'm sure my post count wouldn't be this high if I didn't believe what I said mattered. That's the ego doing what it knows best.

It was relevant in the times of 1996 and 2014 now.

This book is popular.

You really have to try hard to find a good $8-10 wine today.

I didn't post my salary, and in 1996 I was hardly rich or trying to brag.

I can probably be Supreme Sommelier Overlord tough for most here that don't drink $100+ plus bottles every night.

The current wines my fiancee is enjoying in moderation are:

In order of preference:
Marchese Dell'Elsa Moscato D'Asti

Chateau Megyer Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos

Il Duca Moscato d'Asti

Il Duca Pink

I am just trying to be honest here and have relevant data to add to this.

All the snobbery aside, I've had a Mr. Beer Homebrewing kit in my Amazon cart for over a year, and I just got my tax return money back. Should I pull the trigger?

Do we have an ATOT homebrewing thread I could read?

I basically just use the site to avoid specific beers based on traits. Most specifically I don't like Belgian yeasts, or floral tastes/aromas. So if a review posts anything like that, I avoid the beer.

The site is very useful for me.

I don't even look at that site before I taste a beer. What's the point? Half the fun of drinking unique beers is discovering them on my own and figuring out what I like and don't like.

I once asked a beer brewer who works at at a beer museum/brewery in Belgium if he only drank those high quality beers. He answered: "A good beer, is a beer with a friend"

Beer tasting is a hobby like everything else, the enthusiast notice (or pretend to notice) all the small differences, the rest of us just say whether we like the beer or not.

Mr. Beer kits are okay, but not great. If you are on the fence about seriously brewing as a hobby, they are an okay start. I recommend buying an actual starter kit. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Equip...words=homebrew

If you want to start small with brewing the Brooklyn Brewing kits are a great way to get into all grain brewing. Northern Brewer has a great 1 gallon starter kit also. Theirs is an extract kit but I think they also have 1 gallon all grain kits. The northern brewer kit also comes with a capper and auto siphon which is great when it come time to bottle. I purchased this kit for my Dad to get him started in home brewing.

life is too short and there are too many good products out there to be closed-minded with snobbery and fanboyism.

Panachee figs, english Toffee, and Corinthian leather only. If I were inspired by the scents to achieve the level of flexibility you describe I wouldn't need a girlfriend. Oh the ecstasy!
