Bent CPU Pins

Damn. On step 2 out of like 20 building my first box. Right off the bat, I can't get the CPU into the socket. Didn't cram it or anything. It rest about 3/4 of the way in, but that is it. Low and behold, I take it out and there are a few bent pins. What happened here? This was retail/box, so is it something I did?

I guess I have a few questions. Is this thing ruined? Can I bend the pins back if I see which ones are askew. Do I have any recourse? Like will Newegg take this back or can I go to AMD? This was and AMD 2200 going into an Asus A7N266-VM. Should have used my other screen name - Foolsmate. That would have been pretty apropos. Thanks so much for any advice

If you bend the pins back into a straight line (try a credit card) it should work fine. When installing, be sure to line up the 2 diagonal pins with the corresponding diagonals on the socket.

With a steady hand, good eyes and LOTS of patience, you can straighten them out. I've fixed pins that were almost bent in a U shape. Look down the rows of all the pins to make sure they are all straight. Sometimes as your doing one, you may tweak another around it, or bump one around where you held it.

Hows about this for coincidence...

I bought a retail Northwood (2.4b) last week and exactly the same thing happened to me... i had 1 bent pin and the CPU would only fit in 3/4 to the slot... i straightened the bent pin (very gently) and it slotted in fine after that.

I was stunned that i had a bent pin... it 100% wasnt me that bent it, ive built P4's before and never seen this (or heard of it) usually you hear of people bending them by mistake by applying to much pressure but i was totally not to blame in my case and im sure you wasnt too.

For the record my P4 works fine... very gentle pressure is all you need, copper bends real easy.

I have encountered bent pins on a Cyrix M2, AMD Duron and a Pentium 4....The Cyrix was my fault but the other two came like that....was shocked with the P4.....it was OEM but still....very gently straightening and voila....it's sitting behind me now as our new server.

When I was building my daughter's P4, I dropped the processor. I was able to straighten the bent pins with much patience and some mini screwdrivers. An inexpensive jewelers loop is very helpful in these circumstances.

There are reviews on the NewEgg web site about P4s with bent pins. NewEgg will replace the CPU - use their no questions asked RMA policy on line.

Thanks everyone. I fixed a few of the bent pins w/ a credit card. It still didn't want to go in, so I used a little trial and error by fitting one side, then the next, then the back, etc, to try and figure exactly where the friction was. I bet you've all done that before. It seemed like the logical thing to do. Anyway it worked after about 10 minutes.

Ok, onto the next question. This CPU, H, F was retail and I ripped it out of the box myself. Yet these pins seemed bent without me doing anything. Now, I go to put the heatsink on, I notice the bottom area of it (down below the grill part) is all scraped on both sides. Is this normal? If I didn't know any better I'd say this thing had some use. It's shiny and clean enough though . . .

Unfortunately, 2nd question of probably many. Thanks.

Wow! Sounds like it could be a repackaged RMA version.

It does sound as though it was damaged either at Newegg or when it was packaged at AMD. If you are really concerned, send it back for a replacement. Odds are it will all work fine and there was some sort of packaging problem or damage in handling somewhere along the line. I don't think Newegg had anything to do with repacking a return or something like that. Good luck and welcome to AT fourms!

...fixed typo...

Thanks for the welcome. I've got another screen name with a whopping 20 posts. Heh heh. Ok next question. Why is it that I try to clip the heatsink on and it only will let me do one side (the side with the screwdriver notch). I don't know what I am going to do to try to get the first side down and then the notch side. Are there any tricks here? I feel like I'm bearing down way to hard on the processor which I know I'm not supposed to be doing. You're also not supposed to angle it to get it clipped either? Should I bend the clips or anything?

Some of you guys are gonna have to stay with me here I have a feeling this is gonna be a long weekend . . . .
