Hey guys I am building a new Ryzen 7950X rig and finally received all my parts. First time with AM5 here.

While I was about to install the CPU I noticed the socket looked a bit strange. It appears there could be 2 bent or missing pins on the socket, I'm not too sure but don't wanna take a chance killing either the 7950X and/or motherboard or both. I've posted pictures!

It's a bit hard to see, and at my older age I don't have the most stable hands.

I had this issue on my Z97 mobo. I got it used from Aliexpress. I tried to make the pins straight but they seemed too fragile and there was more of a risk of breaking them. Since the seller had told me that the mobo booted fine before shipping, I went ahead and put the CPU on it and it worked fine. I'm guessing it's the same thing here. They are probably trying to pass on an open box to you, thinking you won't notice, especially if the CPU boots fine.

Good. It's a shame that retailers try to pass these boards as new.
Yes I agree. The thing about motherboards in all my years building is that the boxes aren't shrink wrapped. The only thing keeping them looking like a new product is that tape that seals the static electric bag.

My ASROCK PG Sonic Z790 mobo was way more than that. I actually cursed while trying to break it free from its packing. It was bound to the foam underneath it with plastic clips on each corner.

It's a nice feeling knowing it is a new product. That is the way my Asrock 570 Taichi was packed.

It's nice to know that you're getting a new product when you actually order one. Amazon has been dropping the ball lately and I've been extremely disappointed.

I've ordered two new corsair h150i capellix coolers in the last two weeks and both I've received refurbished units. Not only that but one of my new corsair ddr5 6000 kits the rgb doesn't work. I've just built two new 7950x machines for heavy duty AV1 encoding for a new streaming site I'm about to launch but its been bitter feelings. Sigh.

So much for buying on the cheap.

I buy my stuff from Amazon...
I have super expensive high end gear, i have gotten from them.
What is wrong with Amazon?

I'm guessing cheap compared to getting Threadripper Pro or Intel workstation.

GG getting a HEDT or WORKSTATION class cpu on there tho.
Its either super overpriced, without warrenty as its not from authorized.
Or its MSRP, sold out til next century because everyone buys from AMAZON since it has such a flexible return policy.

The most important thing is make sure it says Shipped and Sold By : AMAZON.
If its sealed, and it was from Shipped and Sold by Amazon, its very likely its new.

For Newegg, ONLY and i cant stress ONLY buy stuff that says shipped and sold from NEWEGG.
Even if it says Sold by: the name of the vendor Shipped by newegg.... just PASS.
It has to say BOTH Shipped and SOLD by Newegg.

If it says even something like Sold by : Western Digital Shipped by: Newegg STILL HARD PASS.
Newegg does not validate vendors sometimes, so sometimes its not really Western Digital, but a 2ndary dealer. So you still have a high chance of it being a RMA / Refurb.

Depending upon what you are buying, "Sold and shipped by Amazon" doesn't help as much as it used to since Amazon went to their shared inventory model. For higher end stuff, it isn't as much an issue as there simply isn't as much of that type of inventory to be shared.

I think I mentioned this in another thread about the Gigabyte Z790 UD MB I bought recently.

I was very concerned that the box it came in was not at least taped closed and the anti-static bag was only taped, not actually sealed. I thought there was a good chance it was not genuinely new.

When I went back to the (UK) specialist IT retailers and emailed them about this they were very understanding and said if I wanted to exchange it they were fine about that. But what they told me and have no reason to disbelieve them is that is how Gigabyte MBs are now presented.

In short we should not be blaming the retailers, although of course they could be adding to the problem by reselling returned items. We should be blaming the MB manufacturers for packaging these delicate pieces of electrical hardware with such a lack of care.

They are neither properly protected from moisture or shock damage and the boxes are not tamper proof which make it easier for unscrupulous retailers to pass off second hand equipment as new.

I blame this on badly considered 'green' environmental pressure to reduce retail packaging. Manufacturers happily do this. Why? Because it is cheaper just to use cardboard and not protect the MB with polystyrene, seal the MB in the anti-static bag and security tape the box and/or shrink wrap it.

But this is a particular case where that reduction in packaging should not apply. The PC building consumer is now left to take take part in a lottery where without any obvious damage to the box, like Shrodinger's cat, the condition of the MB can be considered perfect or broken or even replaced by a different cat with known issues, sorry, MB. You won't know until you open it.

That is not how it should be.

The last motherboards (Gigabyte and MSI) I bought were packaged fine. I feel like the major issue is just not sealing the box - if they just added a piece of tape to the outside, it would be fine. The interior packaging and protection is certainly sufficient, and they include socket covers for LGA sockets.

Or just pass on Newegg altogether

The problem with Amazon is they co-mingle 3rd party seller stock with Amazon stock. This can mean counterfeit, used, or substituted items if you are unlucky as the warehouse robot doesn't differentiate - it just reads a barcode and grabs an item from a bin. In general as a buyer this is not a major issue as you can always demand refund or replacement. As a seller you can unfortunately have your ratings destroyed without recourse.
