It's because they really liked the main actor, but he's FAT and UGLY IRL. In comes CGI.
Honestly though, that's a terrible statement. It's like saying you don't understand why they did Shrek in CG, or any other CG film for that matter.
There is honestly no real difference between Shrek and Beowulf. They're both fairy tales, essentially, and they contain numerous fantastical elements that would be hard to mimic IRL without the use of any CGI.
Sure, they could have given Real-Angelina a fake tail with CGI and had live action with a ton of CGI (and all the greenscreen work to incorporate it).. or they could have just done the whole movie in CGI, and saved a ton of effort from having to scout locations, hire extras, blah, blah, etc.
I also think the strides they are making with CGI and MoCap are TREMENDOUS. There has never been a CG movie this realistic, ever. And the last movie to really try was Final Fantasy: TSW, and that was how many years ago?
I just think it's kind of hypocritical for everyone to rave about all these action movies that are 50%++ CGI, and then turn around and ridicule full-CG movies.
Anyway, as a CG artist myself, I applaud the people who made Beowulf for putting in such effort. MoCap isn't quite "there" yet, as I can see from the previews, but I think the progress they've made is still tremendous. I hope to see this used in more movies.
