Best 200 GB Hard drive?

I'm looking into buying a 200GB hard drive... I want it to be as fast as possible despite the large size, but perhaps more importantly I want it to be reliable and relatively quiet. Any quick suggestions? Thanks in advance!

most people will probably mention the big three: western digital Special Edition, Maxtor Diamondmax Plus9, or the Seagate 7200.7

If you want speed, maxtor and western digital would be the top two choices

My WD 200gb is not reliable. I had to RMA one because it was corrupting, and the replacement is now corrupting the same way. Even after a format, it corrupts. Waiting for the replacement for this one now. Stay away from WD.

Edit: No, my drives are not overheating.

A few bad drives doesn't make one company bad. I have three WD running in a couple of my systems, they have been running great. I would suggest paying a few more bucks for the SE w/ the 8mb cache. Not only are they faster, but they come with a 3 year warranty....

'bout 3 weeks ago I purchased an internal maxtor 7200RPM 8MBs cache HD. I use it in a seperate external case (I'm a sager laptop user, thus the reason for the external case) using FireWire and it runs very smooth compared to my last two prebuilt external hard drives. The previous two I got were Iomega externals and I recently took them apart and distinctly remember seeing Hitachi on one of them. Don't think you should go that route as both the Iomegas make weird screeching sounds every few minutes and one had a problem with writing data. However, I must also say this... Prior to buying the internal maxtor I bought a prebuilt 160GB maxtor external. My computer wouldn't see it and the HD made a weird repetitive beeping like sound. No problems what so ever from my new external case/internal drive combo though. Runs very quick and is extremely quiet. But I guess every company has hard drives that come out with a problem or two. So, my suggestion... just buy what is priced reasonably for the performance you want... keep all reciepts and packaging and take it back if any problems occur within the first week. After that... I'd say it's pretty safe to assume the hard drive will work pretty nicely, though I'm sure there are those that had problems even after a week of perfect usage. Just from my experience... hard drives seem to show wether they will work well or not with in the first few hours of usage.

If you want the best drive for the money, take a step down to a 180gb and get the IBM/Hitachi Deskstar 180GXP. It's one of the fastest IDE drives available.

2 bad drives in a row looks pretty bad. And as far as I know, all 200gb drives are 8mb.

WD and Maxtor are faster, but Seagate is very close (and you probably won't notice a difference), and is much quieter.

BTW, don't listen when people say that "WD sucks!" or "Maxtor is crap!" just because they bought a drive from them and it didn't work. There are millions of people who have good, working drives, from those companies, and one bad experience doesn't negate the fact that these companies are good.

my 200 WD 8MB is great. no complaints. When i go and use my older computer with 80 gig Maxtor 2MB .. it's so loud. \

not saying maxtor is loud .. my 160 gig 8MB Maxtor is just as quiet. but it doesn't get accessed as much as the 200 because the 200 is my boot drive.

bah I have 6 western digital drives (all 7200RPM ranging from 40 to 120 gig) and I love them... western digital drives are awesome... I back up about 60 gigs of data weekly... and I use the drives a lot over the course of the week.. and they keep on ticking... so yeah.

A deathstar? Your joking i hope... Seagate is not the fastest, but doesnt relaly lag behind by much, will be quiet/reliable though Maxtor, some are quiet some arnt. Western Digital, I can garuntee it wont be as quiet as Maxtor and especially Seagate since they dun use ldb bearings STILL...

Serial ATA is a new kind of drive interface, it's a much smaller cable, and runs at ATA150 speeds, and doesnt use bulky ribbon cables. If you got the money to spend a bit more on it I'd personally say it's worth it, but you'll need a controller card or motherboard that will be compatible with it.

AFAIK its the fastest IDE drive in the higher capacities, its quiet enough in my box (a SN45G XPC) and since hitachi took over they offer 3yr warranty.

The 'deathstar' was a different model, and those issues were fixed by a firmware update IIRC. Anyhow, its irrelevant because that was when IBM was doing the production of the drives -- the drives are now produced by hitachi.

I have 3 WD 200 gig SE with 8mb cache.
So far so good.
I choose WD coz they have 3 years warranty.
