I am buying a very fast computer and I don't want it to lag because of the HD.

What is the best 40GB HD to get?
What is better 7200RPM or 5400RPM?

Thank you
Derek

7200rpm is faster, and therefore better. I would look at the IBM Deskstar 75GXP 45GB. It's usually right around $200.

Right at this moment either the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus45 40GB, or the IBM 75GXP 45GB.

7200rpm.

IBM Deskstar 75GXP, I have the 30gig variety and I love it.
Fastest IDE hard drive around right now, it's also very reliable and quite quiet, available in 15,20,30,45,60,75 gig sizes.

The Maxtor DiamondMaxPlus 45 is a good choice as well, but I prefer the IBM.

RPM is how fast the drive spins, faster spinning reduces aggregate seek time and increase transfer rate. Therefore the higher the better, so 7200rpm is better. 5400rpm is probably quite a bit cheaper though.

Why is the Maxtor HD and (or) the IBM HD's good? Which of the two are best and why

I really appreciate your replies already

THanks again

In my opinion they're equally good, get whichever is cheaper.

I just got maxtor 40GB 7200rpm 2MB buffer at 119.99. I have been using Maxtor 30GB 53073U6 for several months, which is very quiet. I am pretty much satisfied with maxtor. I picked up another maxtor to fill the empty port of promise 66 controller because I decided to give up IDE RAID. I read quite a few testimony that maxtor and RAID don't mix. If I insisted on RAID, I would have bought new IBM drives.

read the review at storage review, I bought the 75GXP 45GB for $170. If you don't want the extra performance then go with the maxtor, it's cheaper. I haven't used a maxtor but I also heard the IBM is quieter.

The IBM 75GXP is a bit faster than the DMax+ 45 (both of these are 15gigs/platter are a fair bit faster than the DMax+40 which is 10gig/platter).

The DMax+45 is probably a fair bit cheaper than the IBM 75GXP though, Maxtor has the best value/performance hard drives out there.

It's a tough call...if you don't mind spending the extra go for the IBM, if you want a better price/performance go for the Maxtor.

AFAIK they are equally quiet, I've never heard the DMax+45, but their other drives are quite noise free.

I have four 40GB Maxtors on a Promise Raid....works perfectly fine. Promise is coming out with a new RAID card that can handle 8 IDE drives and do RAID 5... I am going to hook eight 80's on it and set it up as an FTP server.

I am a Maxtor fan myself because they offer the best bang for the buck, and their overall quality has improved drastically the past couple of years. IBM has history on their side, they are known for the best drives. However, currently I think Maxtor is on the way to challenge IBM's position. I'd go with the Maxtor since you can usually find it for cheaper. But if they are the same price, I'd grab the IBM. I only have one IBM drive and over 5 Maxtors. Great experience with all of them.

If you want fast do some sort of RAID 0 on two 20GB drives, you'll get a 'virtual' (so to speak, guestimating your RAID knowledge) 40GB drive that's faster than any single 40GB drive, so long as the two 20's are newer.

I would suggest you get Maxtor. I've been using it for 6 years and its still running. Never had a problem.
