I'm happy with my 9600 Pro but I wouldn't say it is the best card available.

NV 6800 ultra extreme and ATI X800XT Platinum Edition, both quite rare.

For practical purposes it is as bradyapba said, the 6800U and the X800XT.

Uh, huh. You're powers of perception are impressive.

If you can find an X800XT for $425 or less than I'd go for that. Otherwise I'd say go for a 6800GT as their performance for the price is very impressive. Which games do you play? That will ultimately determine which card you should get. Well, that and your budget.

X800XTPE or in a few weeks, the X850XTPE will be the best.

People can argue all they want on the X800XTPE vs 6800U, but the FACT is, the X800XTPE wins in the majority of all tests and even more so with AA/AF turned on, and recent driver updates have almost completely destroyed the performance gap between it and the 6800u in Doom3.

The X850 XT PE is PCIe only. There is a 10% performance increase BTW. And I think it doesn't work as hard when not running powerful programs to reduce heat. I'm not sure if that is true or not.

eVGA 6800GT. Don't be a sucker, save yourself some cash, and sacrafice a 5fps difference from a 6800 Ultra Linkage for you here, and proof for you here

god? what?? 6800u>x800 any model? the x800xt by itself(not pe) can beat out the 6800u on most tests! just look at Anandtech's video card reviews. but seriously. 6800gt for bang for the buck(right now), x800xl bang for the buck later, x800xt for best you can really buy.

ATI has stated that the x850s will all be comming to agp.

I love my 6800 Ultra... It isn't "rare" from what I have seen. I had no trouble ordering two of them. The ATI on the other hand, well I couldn't find one

Amen!

They are dead even.

THe X850 is PCI-E only. Please provide sources where you heard they are releasing and AGP version. If it is it will be around 5-10% faster on average (DIII an exception as well as some other titles) than the 6800U. However the 6800U isn't the fall refresh, and still holds its own very well.

omg, the x800xt might be a bit better then the 6800u, but it dosnt have sm3 support or hdr support. plus its virtually impossible to find, and its WAY more expensive. i guess i'd be happy with either one, but i would rather have the 6800u.
the xtpe isnt what i would consider a video card, its a beta-concept
and from what ive heard the x850 series is going to suffer from the same quanity problems. i think i read an artice on hardocp.com that said that.

edit: for proof, search newegg.com for "6800" and filter by highest price. all ultras and gt's are in stock, and ultras run about $500.
then search "x800xt" and you will find that ONE out of like 14 is in stock. lol and most of them are $500+, with some over $600.
a search for "x800xtpe" yeilds NO results.

good one ati

btw, not an nvidia fanboy, i own a 9600pro that has served me well.

I strongly believe that if you have a motherboard with a certain chipset like the any nforce or any ATI chipset that you should have a matching graphics card. Well on that matter I am trying to build two new computers one of them is an nforce4 sli system all gigabyte of course. I think they have the best of the best boards with the dual Bios and dual power. Also their NVIDIA 6600 GT sli is also affordable and pretty. I plan to use that computer as a media center pc with a Linux Media Center Os that my friend and I are working on. We plan to use two Samsung 26? HD TV?s that are only about 700 each but are well worth it for having more features than any LCD TV I have seen so far one of those features is an optical out put which is rare to find on any TV even those above 1000 Dollars.

Now the other system I want to build is a dual AMD MP System using a gigabyte dual mp board I think it is the one I like the best and mostly the price. The other board had in mind was an MSI Dual AMD 64?s and it had am AGP 8x slot but the price was still insane. I am not sure on what video card to use in that system I was thinking maybe a
Wildcat4 7110 I can find it for 540 dollars but I am not sure I like the price but am not sure if it is the best for it. I know a lot of you would say go for an NVIDIA 6800 or an ATI X800XT but I am not sure how those would work on this board. The other card I was looking at is the Wildcat4 7210 it has about 360 Megs of DDR Ram and supports about 4 monitors 2 DVI and 2 Analog. But you can always get the Analog to DVI adapter. That one is nice but the price range is over 1000 dollars if you can afford it, it is a sweet card.

If you have any recommendations or question I will be checking the site frequently as this is an issue I have been trying to mend for a while.

I hope you don't intend to use the Wildcat for gaming. It stinks. Its performance is extremely narrow focused: Pro-E, Catia, SolidWorks, etc, not OpenGL games, which make use of lighting & shaders and other stuff CAD/CAM does not.

I mentioned on other posts in this forum that I tried getting a ATI x800xt PE for months but no dice. On the other hand BFG 6800 Ultra OC could be had at a few websites I searched. Maybe it is a good thing that ATI flagship video card turned out to be just "vaporware" and I ended up with the 6800 Ultra OC. A lifetime warranty shows that BFG really stands behind their product.
