Best AMD CPU for 100$ ????

Hi all.
I have been out of the loop for a spell, but would like to upgrade to a new CPU ...and I know that there are great opinions out there on the best 100$ CPU.

I now have a 650 Duron overclocked to 833 on the MSI Pro2 (200 FSB) ..with 256 ram (PC133). There is the Duron, MP, and XP. Help me out on this one ...OK?

just got the highest thunderbird you can with the 200 fsb, im sure you can find it for under 100 if you look around. maybe look at the 1.2 .

The nice thing about AMD processors is that the socket has stayed the same, so all your are typically limited by is what FSB speed your motherboard supports. Get the fastest OEM chip that you can for the FSB speed your mobo can do. Make sure you update your BIOS prior to putting in the new chip.

Athlon XP 1500+ can be had OEM for $99. I'd bet it could oc to at least 1800+ speeds, prolly 2000+ speeds

Find any Tbirds tht is running at 200 FSB...the "B" version. OR

Any "C" version tht runs 266 FSB. It will run fine in ur mobo...just tht it will run at 200 FSB instead of 266. As most Tbirds is unlocked (1.2 Ghz & above) & ur mobo support multiplier change...u can up the multiplier to make it run at rated speed.

Do flash to the latest bios to improve compatibilty.

Thanks for the replies ...men. The XP really looks appealing ....I was hoping that it might work, but if it won't ...then I will have to go to one of the others.

I should probably go with the 266 FSB. Never know that I might sell this board to a buddy with the 650 / 833 ...and then get me a board to handle the 266 FSB.

Athlon 1.0 200FSB and OC the crap out of it. Ive got mine at 1.323 right now with not so good cooling.

I agree with minendo the Pro 2 and 2A will not support XP. Most of us couldn't get a stable FSB over 107. So get a 1 gig and it will probably do around 1.35-1.4 with a little FSB rise. The board is a stable board and produces solid scores. In about 4 months, the KT33A should be out with stable drivers and the TBred could be a good time to move.
