Any GOOD SSD will run circles around a spindle drive, yes. The old JMicron-based SSDs will stutter and end up performing worse. So, Intel G1 or G2, Indilinx (OCZ Vertex, OCZ Agility, several other brands), and Samsung based drives will all work fine.
As I understand it, most of the JMicron drives have have Firmware updates which remove any stuttering. During my research on Kingston drives, the 64Gb version popped up and that was reported to not suffer from stuttering after firmware upgrades.
The Kingston SSDNow V drives use a Toshiba TC58NCF602GAT which is a rebrand of the JMicron JMF602 controller allegedly with better firmware. (SSD-Controller list I compiled: http://www.servethehome.com/?p=168)
The question is whether it is worth the risk versus just getting an Intel, Indilinx, or even new Samsung drive and not worrying about stuttering.
