Best Anime to get into

I just saw the commercial for the new Apple Seed Ex Machina or whatever it is, and it looked good. That doesn't look like what I thought Anime was, but thats okay.

I don't really want to do this by trial and error, because I don't have enough time.

So, for those in the know, could you list in your opinion the best Anime? Preferrably something semi-recent.

By the way I know the term "best" is very subjective, but I'm talking overall story, depth, blah blah blah you get the idea.

Also, someone please tell me, what should I watch before I go out and rent the new Appleseed (is that what it's called?)

Thanks

My favorites would be (in no particular order)

cowboy bebop, trigun, kenshin (first 2 arcs only), tenchi muyo, HELLSING (one of my favorite), maybe a few others I forget

I'm ashamed to say, I actually got into Initial D as well.

Naruto, once you get past the kiddy stuff in the beginning and get to the real intense parts.

Sadly, the Kiddie parts are the best parts. At least the fights didn't go for 20 episodes. Shitsux

"Best" anime is a relative term. There are great series out there, but you need a genre.

If you want a good series for now, "Gundam 00" is a great start.

to ease into anime:
cowboy bebop
samurai shamploo (same creators/producers as bebop) both these series are entertaining and extremely well done.

hellsing, is pretty good, but kind of short, and some of the character development was lackluster.
blood: the last vampire - very short(45min?) but good action/suspense with great animation.

if you get a taste for anime and want to expand a bit:
eureka 7 (if you get past the techno sound track- after the 10th episode you will be HOOKED!)
furi kuri (a.k.a. fooly cooly, FLCL) some similar themes as eureka, but much shorter series, and goofier/funnier in general.

if you get the chance:
tekkon kinkreet- amazing. my new favourite anime movie of all time. just awesome.

Depends....what kind of genre do you like? And how much about Japanese culture do you know?

Noir is great. One season, so it doesn't drag on.
Cowboy Bebop is also amazing. Non-anime lovers can easily enjoy this one.
Rurouni Kenshin is cool if you're into Japanese history. For me, it was the other way around... watching Kenshin gave me a boner for Japanese history (and I'm now taking a class on it).
Peace Maker Kurogane is another one in the same historical Japan era. Fun to watch, lots of action.

Until they're done? I would agree with that for Naruto Shippuden but it is kind of pointless to watch that without out seeing the original Naruto. There are 135 episodes before they get to the filler crap of the original Naruto.

Whenever the show finally stops. I hated being jerked around for 3 ep's per fight. I stopped after ep 60 or so.

not sure. i only saw the first set of 19 eps. or so?
was bummed that they didn't develop some of the characters more (the priest for instance).

anyone else want to recommend Berserk? i keep thinking i should check it out.

also was considering checking out Reign, if only for the peter cheung animation. but animation can't carry a series... anyone want to recommend it?

If you are looking for a series, Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell would be my recommendations for a newbie. If you're including films then there are a lot more "newbie-friendly" options.

Did you watch it for the robots or for the ridiculous deep-ness of it?

I watched it for the stick figure animation at the end. That is the only good reason to watch it!

Neon Genesis Evangelion was good, if a bit confusing at the end. Watch End of Evangelion as well, it explains the events leading up to instrumentality that the TV anime left out.

I liked Eureka Seven a lot. Kind of slow at first, but by about episode 20 I was hooked.

Would suggest Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as well. It's not particularly deep or thought-provoking, but it's a very fun show, I really enjoyed it.

There's tons of stuff out there, it'd help a lot of you give us a genre. I'm more into the sci-fi and mecha shows obviously.

"See ya Cowboy..."

Samurai Shamploo is short and easy to follow, and funny too.
