I don't really want to do this by trial and error, because I don't have enough time.

So, for those in the know, could you list in your opinion the best Anime? Preferrably something semi-recent.

By the way I know the term "best" is very subjective, but I'm talking overall story, depth, blah blah blah you get the idea.

Also, someone please tell me, what should I watch before I go out and rent the new Appleseed (is that what it's called?)

Thanks

It would help if you told us what kind of movies you like. There are genres within anime.

Gotta check out Monster if you like suspense type of stuff. Some action, mostly mystery solving type of stuff. And it's got a clearly defined ending, which it has already reached. 74 episodes long.

Also Death Note, 37 episodes long, good for a relatively quick start and end.

Naruto I will say I am a fan off, as well as bleach. Sometimes a long running show is a good thing, guys.

Fate/Stay Night is a good action/fantasy series as well, but kinda tough as a first, IMHO. (24 episodes long)

For pure crazy, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is really, really funny. Kind of hard to follow in some places, but a great series anyways. 14 episodes long, so another one to sit down and watch in maybe a week, not months.

Except that's only how the original series was... the others changed quite a bit =\. The OVA sequel to LH wasn't too bad either.

EDIT:

That school movie thing doesn't sound familiar and it's not another Tenchi thing. I'll have to ask a friend of mine (you know, everyone knows an "anime sage" or so that they ask them the random "hey there's an anime involving blah blah blah" question) .

The beginning of the end for anime.

Keitarou owns the bath house in Love Hina, not the females... unless the other guy got it wrong. Actually his grandma owns it and put him in charge while she was on vacation or something like that. But he does in a sense .

I enjoyed Love Hina for what it's worth. Series with the clueless male around tons of females tends to be amusing (you can even include shows like FMP in with this even though it has a completely different setting). It's also a rule that every series in this paradigm must have a hot springs episode.

Only Tenchi Muyo was able to pull this off. Love Hina was too over the top and it got old after a few episodes.

there was another whos names i totaly blanking on, dude was in HS making some student film, totally clusless tons of girls around him

Wasn't htat just a different incarnation of tenchi?

i dont think so, for some reason i wanna say it was straberry panic but i know thats not it

it did however involve someone with strawberry panties, and had more fanservice in it then most animes

im gonna have to look when i get home its bugging me

Shit man, I've seen it too!

Chicks ended up being from Space Army. 1 stupid chick and 1 smart chick. Stupid chick holds down smart girl when they both try to find employment in teh city.

I'm almost 100% positive it's another incarnation of Tenchi. A spinoff if you will.

Shit, I've seen that but I can't remember the name! >_< It involves that geeky girl that eventually lets her hair down and removes her glasses and looks totally hot (to the main character) and the main character also meets that blonde girl on the swings at the park.

Definitely tenchi derivative. Mohoshi and Kiyone are the cops chasing Washu. But they all crashed on earth. There were a few variants so I can't get any more specific without more details.

The first anime that I actively set out to rent from the video store was Project A-ko. That introduced me to the "incredibly fucking annoying" girl character subtype. But hooked me on the bubbly music and the general anime "feel."

Then I watched Ninja Scroll and Fist of the North Star and was absolutely shocked that such blood/violence existed in "cartoons" (I was like... 12 at the time). So that cemented my admiration for anime, as a whole.

Today, I'd recommend something fairly mainstream as someone's first anime. Cowboy Bebop, perhaps.

Ever seen the newer Shin Hokuto no Ken? Only checked out a couple episodes of it, but all the head explosions were intense :Q!

I am tired of seeing anime threads with countless replies with just bebop, naruto and bleach

Why keep regurgitating old and fading series x100000 and over? out with old, in with new series. besides, the latter two only caters a constricted fanbase who are into shonen manga/anime.

As of shows that started in January, these shows have undoubtedly high quality of drawing, plot adaptation, dont require prior knowledge of the original to follow:

Shigofumi (ended last week, 12 eps)
True Tears (ends this week, 13 eps)
CLANNAD (ends this week, 23 eps)
Spice and Wolf (ends this week, 13 eps)
ARIA the Origination (ends this week, 13 eps)

Personally, I found myself very fond of H2O - feels a lot like Myself;Yourself from last october. Drawing quality takes a plunge here and there, but very immersive overall.

Hayate no Gotoku is about to be over with just the final episode (52) left, what a great ride it has been. Though it is loaded with a tons of parodies, I consider it is one of the shows you could enjoy without fully understanding everything thrown at you.

If you feel like suggesting something totally different, be advised that the third installment of the infamous Gyagu Manga Biyori just started airing a while ago

Today in Class 4-2 (I forgot the title lol)

Now that you mention it, Minami-ke would be another quality show that wouldnt offend too many people (same director). both shows get a seal of hillariousness approval from me.

Fate/Stay Night is a good action/fantasy series as well, but kinda tough as a first, IMHO. (24 episodes long)
one of the worst shows ever made, by far. in my mind it clearly outdoes shinketsutan tsukihime in that regard (shinketsutan didnt have bad drawing, just different from the original. music was great, as is the case with most jc staff stuff). studio deen should just stick with cheaply made yet entertaining shows like CODE-E.

For pure crazy, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is really, really funny. Kind of hard to follow in some places, but a great series anyways. 14 episodes long, so another one to sit down and watch in maybe a week, not months.
I am one of the biggest haruhidiots around, and still fail to see how people find this show that funny. As great a pinnacle of recent anime production as it is, the show is not an all-out comedy per se. There definitely are parts that are very clever and funny, but IMO most things are rather amusing than funny. For us haruhidiots, the fun part is to see how well the anime captures the atmosphere and vibes from reading the original light novel; it is more than a fair summary of what the book is about plus with subtle extras here and there to fill in the gap and entertain the fans.

I just started watching OHHC. It's possibly one of the funniest/fucked up things I have ever watched. The faux incestous twins and the lolita kid are hilarious.

Amen to that

1. Havent watched
2. Good, but the plot twists are annoying
3. Decent. I wonder if they are going to do the afterstory
4. Awesome. Naked Wolf Girls, Medieval Economics. What isnt there to like
5. Haven't Watched

1st Season only. 95% of Okawari Sucks. The other 5% is awesome though

Tsukihime Anime doesnt exist. Man faces make my eyes burn

YES. Well said.

With that, these openings are awesome.

Also, "Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni" is good. Lots of mystery, decent gore, and loli's.

It would really help to know what kind of movies you get into. If you like gore, if you love a deep, involving plot, do you like magic? Machines? Magical machines? Perhaps something more true to life using none of the above? Howabout something really out there, really sci-fi. Would you like that humorous? Serious? Serious with a bit of humor here and there? If you go for humor, would you like it over-the-top almost making no sense in what could only be called "Azumanga Daioh-esque" or something a bit more docile? Do you understand the Japanese culture as some humor references some part of it?

Anime, to me, is nothing more than just "animated anthing you could ever imagine" so take your pick. There are plenty for each and every specific example you want. It's unfair for you to say that your only criteria is that it has to be semi-recent. Believe me, you will have a ton of trial-by-error still.

Cowboy Bebop is hands down the best anime series for overall excellence throughout.

Other good stuff :

Wolf's Rain
Samurai Champloo
Full Metal Panic / Fumoffu / 2nd Raid
Noir
Naruto (quality varies DRASTICALLY, but recommended if you just have tons of time to waste .. out of every 50 episodes, 25 will suck, 20 will be decent, and 5 will be awesome)
Honey & Clover
Monster
Hellsing
