I am tired of seeing anime threads with countless replies with just bebop, naruto and bleach
Why keep regurgitating old and fading series x100000 and over? out with old, in with new series. besides, the latter two only caters a constricted fanbase who are into shonen manga/anime.
As of shows that started in January, these shows have undoubtedly high quality of drawing, plot adaptation, dont require prior knowledge of the original to follow:
Shigofumi (ended last week, 12 eps)
True Tears (ends this week, 13 eps)
CLANNAD (ends this week, 23 eps)
Spice and Wolf (ends this week, 13 eps)
ARIA the Origination (ends this week, 13 eps)
Personally, I found myself very fond of H2O - feels a lot like Myself;Yourself from last october. Drawing quality takes a plunge here and there, but very immersive overall.
Hayate no Gotoku is about to be over with just the final episode (52) left, what a great ride it has been. Though it is loaded with a tons of parodies, I consider it is one of the shows you could enjoy without fully understanding everything thrown at you.
If you feel like suggesting something totally different, be advised that the third installment of the infamous Gyagu Manga Biyori just started airing a while ago
Today in Class 4-2 (I forgot the title lol)

Now that you mention it, Minami-ke would be another quality show that wouldnt offend too many people (same director). both shows get a seal of hillariousness approval from me.
Fate/Stay Night is a good action/fantasy series as well, but kinda tough as a first, IMHO. (24 episodes long)
one of the worst shows ever made, by far. in my mind it clearly outdoes shinketsutan tsukihime in that regard (shinketsutan didnt have bad drawing, just different from the original. music was great, as is the case with most jc staff stuff). studio deen should just stick with cheaply made yet entertaining shows like CODE-E.
For pure crazy, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is really, really funny. Kind of hard to follow in some places, but a great series anyways. 14 episodes long, so another one to sit down and watch in maybe a week, not months.
I am one of the biggest haruhidiots around, and still fail to see how people find this show that funny. As great a pinnacle of recent anime production as it is, the show is not an all-out comedy per se. There definitely are parts that are very clever and funny, but IMO most things are rather amusing than funny. For us haruhidiots, the fun part is to see how well the anime captures the atmosphere and vibes from reading the original light novel; it is more than a fair summary of what the book is about plus with subtle extras here and there to fill in the gap and entertain the fans.
