Best board / processor combo for $400

Looking to buy a Pentium processor and a Motherboard to go with it. I figure about $210 for the processor and about $190 for the Motherboard.

Want something that supports PCI Express. Any recommendations? Possibly ABIT or ASUS.?. No Intel boards please. This will be going with a x800 or x700 Radeon. BTW, no plans to overclock.

As for the processor... Thinking about Socket 775, but do not know much about them. People say they run hot but I am not too worried about that.

Corret me if I'm wrong, but doesn't only s775 have PCI-e? I don't know much about intel...

What is this system going to be used for? Hopefully not gaming...

s775 is not PCI-Express only. There are several motherboards using chipsets that support only AGP and have a LGA775 socket.

you don't need a $190 motherboard. I would recommend you the $130 ABIT AG8 (or ASUS P5GD1, or the EPoX EP-5EPA+). This way you have $270 left for the processor, which is Pentium 4 550 3.4GHz.

You should know that Intel is going to release a new series of P4 processors (6xx) in February. They will support EMT64 (64-bits), NX, Intels own "Cool N Quiet" and 2MB of L2 cache, which should give it a decent boost in performance.

I have an Asus p5gd1, 530(3Ghz)775 with fan and heatsink that came with it and runs 96F when online and 112F when in some heavy gaming. How much cooler do you need? Asus has great support (techs that will talk to you), Epox blows, NO tech support.
The only prob with the p5gd1 is that you have to have a 24pin PSU even though they say you can run a 20.
