I went to a local Best Buy yesterday and saw quite a few closeouts that seemed decent. They are ridding themselves of a rodent problem, it seems, as the first Intellimouse with Intellieye (mentioned in another thread) is on clearance for $24.50. There is a better buy on the newer model with the grey bottom and the new "eye" speed for $24.99. They also have the Logitech cordless mouse for $28.50, and there's a rebate for buy one Logitech product and get another at half price (also a $10 back for over $50 purchase from Logitech, not sure if that can be combined).

I also saw a ton of Intel AnyPoint adapters on clearance -- USB, PCI, and PC Card. Prices weren't fantastic, but definitely lower than normal. Models included 1Mbps and 1.6Mbps. They also had some 3Com PCI adapters on clearance.

I work for Office Depot. Last Saturday, a customer comes in and ask for rebate form for Intel AnyPoint phoneline adapter for buy one and get one free deal. I am not sure if this also apply to Best Buy and Anypoint wireless. I can't find rebate on Intel site.

rumor has it that there is a news standard for the HomeRF standard Intel Anypoint is using, soon they will be supporting 11mbps...I may be wrong though, but that could be the reason Intel is trying to get ride of those, plus they don't support win2k.

I have the usb wireless, they work pretty good. I can hook my laptop up to my stereo in the living room and play mp3's off of my computer in the other room. The internet sharing works pretty good too.

I don't think you can use electronic GC, unless local Best Buy have eGC entry in their cash register. You might want to double check with your local store. Good luck.

BTW, anybody work in Best Buy as cashier or know this can be done?

When you check out online you have the option to pick it up at your local store.
I just did this on some cables. Worked well enough and saved $5.

I'm having huge problems with their website. Whenver I try to check out it says my info is invalid, which is odd, because I already placed an order with them before.

I have the AnyPoint 1.6Mbs USB for my desktop and a PC card for my laptop. They worked great until my laptop at work was replaced with one running Win2k. As mentioned earlier, they don't have drivers that support Win2k. After some frustrating e-mail exchanges with customer service and tech support, I tracked down a name for a VP of something or other and sent him my tale of woe. Lo and behold they have agreed to send me a Win2k beta driver on 10/20 with general release scheduled for sometime around the end of November.

I would be interested to know, however, if anyone has confirmed this 11Mbs HomeRF update. I can't find anything on it.

The AnyPoint network is quite useful, I have my PC downstairs and my dad's office is upstairs, we can still share the same internet connection and transfer files and share one printer. It's beautiful. Just beautiful.

Lucent's WaveLan adaptors (I believe PCMCIA only) run at 11 Mbps. I believe they are the only ones currently that run at that speed. They are well supported under Linux and Windows 2000. They cost around $130 I believe. We use them heavily in the lab I work at (doing wireless networking research at school).

There is a new standard coming out for Home RF, but the new Intel system will be backwards compatible with current 1.6 Mbps Intel units. I just read an article about that in PC Magazine last night.

The WaveLAN products are not considered Home RF units, but industrial units. I used to install these units. They are very cool units. Prices must have dropped big time, because when I used to help the sales guys with these thing, they were almost $400 USD...

I paid $85 for the PC card version of AnyPoint, after a $25 Onvia coupon. They didn't have the USB model in stock, so they let me use the coupon even though it was under the min. I think I paid about $100 for the USB, I don't quite remember. There was also recently a Circuit City-only rebate on both.

I'll have to check out that PC Mag. There's nothing current on their web site, just the AnyPoint Phoneline.

We are also using the WaveLan at work. Do the WaveLan units require a base unit, or can they operate independently?

I want to say that the PCI 1Mbps AnyPoint adapter was $62.50, but I cannot recall exactly as I wasn't paying too much attention. I don't remember the other prices, sorry.

I just checked the Intel 1.6Mbps wireless Anypoint USB units, and they are $109 at the Best Buy in San Bernadino, CA... I guess the clearance isn't a nation wide thing..

I really wanted those adapters too..

$62.50 is for the 10Mbps phoneline adapter. Here are some other prices (this store didn't have as many as the other):
AnyPoint PC Card wireless: $109.50
" USB phoneline: $89.50
3Com phoneline kit (2 PCI cards and a hub): $129.50
3Com PCI phoneline card: $64.50

The 11MB is nothing new. It is IEEE 802.11b, aka Lucent Wavelan, now called "Orinoco".

It is the same thing as Apple Airport. If you want a FAST wireless lan, grab the Apple Airport for ~$300 list (of course, WE don't pay list prices do we!) Then grab an Orinoco card for your notebook.

There is a PCI version as well, but its just a PCMCIA socket with the orinoco/wavelan silver card in it.

Then again, the airport is just a karlsbridge router with a silver card in it too.

Yeah, if you got a *nix computer or maybe even windows setup you can just use the wireless cards that plug into ISA/PCI. Most of these seem to be PCMCIA card on an ISA adapter put into a PC.

Don't believe me? Just go look around. That is why there is a delay to PCI in my opinion (I'm sure PCI is out, just this PCMCIA<->ISA conversion card instead of building an actual wireless card on an ISA board slowed down the step to PCI).
