My friend's in the market for a new 24x burner and asked me about the best brand of burner. I told him i wasn't sure b/c after I got my 12x Plextor I stopped paying attention. So, is Plextor still pretty good, or are there better brands out there now?

I think it's a YMMV situation -- there are always those "good" brands that fail sooner than expected and those "lesser" brands that are built like tanks and can handle anything you throw at it.

plextor is still considered the best but definitely at a premium price...lite-on and teac offers comparable burners at a much cheaper price (especially if you got in on the those officemax cendyne deals)...

i got the teac cd-w524e (24x10x40)...

Plextor is probably the best but Yamaha comes in a strong second. I've had nothing but great luck with the Yamahas.

I'm impressed with my Plextor 24X burner.

You won't regret it if you take the plunge. The water's nice.

I'm not speaking from experience, but apparently, the Lite-On is almost as good if you want to save a few bucks. OTOH, if you plan to back up your audio CDs, a Plextor drive does fast, high quality DAE like nothing else I've ever seen. I don't know if the same can be said about Lite-On.

I've been very happy with my Plextor 24X.

And yes, it does DAE very quickly. It's a nice drive, well worth the premium.

Here's what I posted in the other thread....

Can't go wrong with Lite-on and I don't buy that their drives are somehow cheaper made. I have 4 Lite-On drives in my own systems and have put countless others in systems I have built for people. You also might like to know that the new Compaq servers we have been getting in the last few months have Lite-On drives and power supplies in them.

As for other CD drives....

Sony is crap
Toshiba is ok but I've had a few die on me very early(used them in everything before I switched to Lite-On)
Mitsumi is solid but unspectacular.
Creative Labs is crap
Afreey is good. Much like Lite-On they aren't well known but build quality stuff
Plextor is good but overpriced. I had one of their SCSI CDRW and it was a good drive but cost about 2x more than it should.

corret me if i'm wrong... but by quality along, plextor is the best.

and i think the only drawback is that you can't make iso from safedisc 2 cds. you'll need to use a reader that can..
such as toshiba dvd drive and then write using plextor.

lite-on lets you read and write safedisc2.

right guys?

Never had any problems with my current LiteOn 32X. I've probably burnt close to 600 discs since I got it last month.

It's much better than my TEAC 16X that I had. ACER makes the absolute worst (or I have the absolute worst luck with their drives).

If I was buying another drive, I'd get LiteOn. They are cheap and just as good as anything else I've tried. Plextors are nice, but they are overpriced at MSRP. I just can't say it's the best because of the price point. Price excluded, Plextor may in fact be the best drive. However, I'd get a LiteOn and spend the left over on something else.

Only problems I've had with a burner was my Ricoh 4x4x24(?). It didn't like cds that came in bulk for some reason.

However, my Smart&Friendly (remember them?) and Teac have worked great. My friends haven't had any problems with their Lite-On burners.

<< lite-ons are overrated imo... >>

Ummm, I have had probably 4 Plextors and three Lite-Ons. I dumped my last Plextor when it wouldn't do SD2...my Lite-On does it fine. I can spend that extra $50 elsewhere instead of on an price inflated Plextor. But hey, that is my opinion.
