I'm using WinXP SP2 and defraging my drives.. however, it does not seem to put all the data at the "beginning" of the drive. It puts large chunks in the middle area.. but i'd like to compact it towards the beginning of the drive because it's faster there. Does this make sense to anyone? Help?

I suggest giving this a try http://www.dirms.com/

Its free, fast, and works great. It has a ton of options as well. I've been using it for months with no issues.

I use the command line only version and not his gui. I find the gui to be lacking.
Power Defragmenter 1.82
It's a standalone based on Sysinternals defragmentation engine that's free and and powerful.
Best free one I've used.

Diskeeper is my current favorite #1 because I can configure the size of the MFT and it's the fastest, O&O #2, it'll let you reorder by name and date and Raxco #3, although I'm not sure about it's optimization.

If you want to try out diskeeper, you can get an[older] version of diskeeper lite free.

They have pulled the link from their website a couple years back, but the download link still works:

http://www1.execsoft.com/dklite.exe

I use it on all my windows boxes without problems here. None of the defrag-in-background or scheduling, but it does alert you when it's time via the use of a service.

An excellent piece of freeware, and I can highly recommend it.

And, yes, I have witnessed the fact that if you lose power during a defrag, your data is not harmed...A friendly service guy decided to reset the main breaker to see if that would fix a problem with an electrical outlet...

Since we're talking about defragging here, what happens when I defrag my RAID1 array? Does the data on both drives get defragged in the same manner? I have 2 Seagate drives and was wondering about this. What happens when you defrag RAID arrays? Both RAID1 and RAID0.

I used Executive Diskeeper 9 for a while, I liked it because it was speedy.

Recently I've switched to perfect disk, which orders files from rarely accessed to most frequently accessed. This seems to slow down the rate at which the disk becomes fragmented. I don't think Diskeeper re-orders the files like this.
