Yeah, I don't think people consider the scenes from FFVI like when Cyan was fighting Kefka's soldiers outside Damcyan Castle and then he suddenly realizes that the water is poisoned. He rushes inside to the great soundtrack (I forget which song it is off the top of my head, but I can "hear" it) to find both his wife and daughter dead along with pretty much everyone else.

It is possible to go through the entire game and ignore things like this. Ignore the character's attitudes such as how Cyan never really forgives himself for letting his family die and visits the Phantom Train (Phoenix Down ftw) in an attempt to stop it.

You also get the sometimes caustic interactions between Edgar and Sabin, the brothers of ... oh jeez, I forgot the castle's name. Edgar being the womanizing but good-intentioned king where Sabin never aimed for anything such as that.

These all being part of the sidestory when it comes to learning about who some of the characters are, especially Tera. Oh and we all know that General Leo was the man . Although he was your typical military hero with strict allegiance, but would break them if he felt his path were led terribly astray.

And how can you forget the awesome SPD'ized laugh that Kefka had.... I can't even think of a way to onomatopeia-ize it .

Also, Final Fantasy VI, like I mentioned, actually ENDED. You weren't left off; you weren't diverted down a path only to be brought back to the main road where you were left wondering what was further ahead on that path. The game also had tons of little secrets that you could do (that everyone knows now). Such as using the cursed shield for 255 (if I remember right) consecutive fights will break the curse. Going to the Battle House and getting Illumina. Getting all of Gau's mob techniques. Getting all of Mog's dances. Defeating the guy at the top of the Fanatic's Tower. It's amusing because unless you read or heard otherwise, I think everyone dies to him at least once unless you magically knew to use Celes' Magitek to absorb the powerful Ultima cast at the end ( or cast Life 3 on someone ).

Okay, I'm done babbling on!

Celes' magitek will absorb it too???

i've been using Life3 all this time!

my personal favorite still is: Final Fantasy Tactics

damn, that was SUCH a good game. it was hard, it had a great story, it had endless hours of gameplay (I logged 99:99:99 on one game save, so over 200 hours probably).

after that, i gotta give it to Final Fantasy VI. Six was amazing. The characters were great, the story was awesome.

then probably VII, of course. it kinda made the whole series mainstream.

FFIII

The story was great, the music was perfect, and the characters were very well developed (Except what happened with Terra and the kids at the end. Blech.)

I never played any of them after FF3/6, which may be my all-time favorite game. But hey, where's the love for Mystic Quest???

i remember game spot did an april fool's "best FF games ever" countdown. gameboy FF legends 1 and 2 were the bookends, Mystic Quest was mentioned, FF 2 in japan and i believe the only one that anyone liked that was included was 9. the geeks were quite upset.

Kinda OT but I wish they would make PC versions of FF12 and FF13... the only problem with that is that they'd cannibalize most of their sales from the PS2 and PS3. I still want my damn PC versions

Its easier to just use berserk on him.

Actually, its easiest to just use mana-draining spells like rasp and osmose, but that takes a LONG time.
Sucking up his MP kills him, you never have to touch his HP.

VI and VII tie by my vote. Personally I like VII better, but since a huge amount of fans love american VI, I think both are spectacular games.

It is usually either VI or VII that gets all the credit =)

The SNES ones, followed closely by the original NES one. I can't see how anybody enjoyed 7. Honestly, that smelly turd made me want to vomit. I vowed never to play another piece of overhyped FF garbage again. Cheesy dialog, too much FMV, crappy linear gameplay. I really can't stress how much I hated that game.

What's kind of funny is that in FF: Legends, I had a monster eat some meat and turn into some type of Black Knight thing. (Monster characters don't level up, they eat meat from dead critters and turn into a different monster). Saw is a weapon/ability that is a one hit kill, but it almost NEVER works on anything. The end boss is very difficult, but every time I use the saw ability, it hits automatically and kills him in one shot.

FF6: Remember, wait for the Ninja when you're getting off the floating island. If you leave, he dies. If you wait, he survives.

FF7: A lot of people hate it, and I thought some of the story was weak, but the biggest appeal was all of the mini-games/things to do. Breeding and racing chocobos, snowboarding, fighting monsters in the gladatorial pits, fusing materia into a single materia, finding secrets like Knights of the Round, Cloud's Limit Break (Omnislash), and hidden characters like Vincent.

There were way too many videos and other cutscenes but in between there was some good gameplay. Not to mention a ton of side quests and optional goodies to collect, which made the SNES games so enjoyable for a lot of folks.
Gameplay was also pretty linear with SNES FF's compared to number 1. Dialog in 7 had about equal cheese factor.
As long as you could trudge through the videos it was a good game, though I will agree it was overhyped.

It may be that dialog and story was just as cheesy in 2 as 7, but the difference was that by the time the PSX was around, games should have advanced. What was that, 9 or 10 years? Adventure was a great game back on the 2600, I'm not about to get excited about it being rehashed in 3D. For some reason though, people will buy anything with the FF name on it.

FF VI is my favorite and has easily the best musical score of the serie. Worst of FF is probably FFVIII.

It should as Magitek absorbs any damaging offensive spell cast against Celes. It's been a long time since I've played it and I always just used Life 3 since I never used Celes in my party .

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest actually had a nice battle theme to it. Also the techno-ized Doom Castle remix is pretty good too. The game may've been lame, but you actually see some of the features in use some of their other games and the music wasn't too bad. Look at FFX or FFT.. both feature limited movement schemes where you only go from place to place, kind of like FFMQ . Look at FFXII's auto play system... hey, FFMQ had the same thing (relatively).

Sadly enough, I own FFMQ for the SNES (along with Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 2 and Final Fantasy 3... CT and FF3 all having their original boxes and stuff ^_^).

But going onto FF4, FF4 was a nice game overall, but I didn't really consider it better than FF6. Although I really liked the characters in FF4, but compared to FF6, some of the characters just weren't as gripping. Although the one part of the game that I can never forget is when I listen to the Boss music (called Battle 2) from FF4. It reminds me of the Valvadez (Goddess of Air) fight from the Tower of Babil where Rosa would always say, "Kain! Jump!", when she started spinning into her tornado form. Then you get the big plot twist near the end of the game that kind of makes you go "wtf... woah... whale..." Oh and WHO can forget the mirror match (heh, some Mortal Kombat lingo) between Cecil the Dark Knight and Cecil the Paladin? I remember going "WHY COULDN'T I CAST DARK WAVE!?" Darn Square USA for removing all the good parts of FF4 when they released it in America.

7 was no more linear than the ones that came before it. much less linear, I'd say. Difference is that story and dialogue would give you a clearer picture of where you needed to go next. FF1 and 2 involved a lot of running around until I stumbled on the next story spot. Fine with me though.

10--that's linear. can't fly around in an airship? they call that FF?

And if you'd read my later reply, I agree that may be possible. I haven't played the SNES ones in a long time. However by the time the PSX around we as gamers should demand more from a game than what was done a decade earlier.

Interestingly, I just read a review of FFXII, and it sounds like I might actually enjoy this one. They pointed out that the protagonist was no longer an angsty, big haired teenager with nothing interesting to say. It may actually have an interesting political plot and a main character with a feasible hairstyle. Too bad I don't have a PS2.

I have VII and IX for PS, X and XII for PS2, and just got III for DS. I really enjoyed VII, but I love love love IX's story and characters. Just started XII. Never got into X, maybe one day. Will try III tonight.

I have XII sitting on my coffee table, but no PS2 to play it with. I can't decide if I want to buy another PS2 just to play it. I also got FFIII for the DS (which is not the US III by the way, it's the Japanese III). I started it last night, I'm not sure how I feel about it so far. VII has been my favorite so far, mainly because I loved all the mini-games, especially chocobo breeding and racing.
