Can someone please explain why Kerio is better than Zonealarm. I just want something simple free and effective.
I prefer Kerio 4 series because it allows a user to not only control any application or process' traffic permissions by authorizing it for certain ip addresses/ranges or full incoming or outgoing permission etc., but allows control over which applications you will allow to start, and also which applications you will allow to launch other applications.
This is great for helping to control devious scripts and trojans etc, helps stop useless 'helper apps' that programs like Real like to simultaneously start, as well as stopping applications from 'phoning home'.
The latest ZA free version (excluding beta) doesn't even allow a user to assign specific addresses an app can access, and requires full outgoing or incoming authorizations only. (correct?) It also doesn't have program/process control.
I don't know why people prefer Kerio v2.15 when they miss the application controls with v4. Its extremely stable for me and altho some may consider it 'bloated' or confusing or a hassle, its offers a heckuva lot more protection possibilities than 2.15.
However you said 'simple'...so maybe what you're looking for is v2.15, or even more simple (yet less customizable), ZA.
