Best headphones for about $40?

I'm looking for headphones for your typical media for the PC (maybe even for my iPod), movies, games, possible audio editing (if I ever get back into that music making hobby).

I don't want to spend so much, only about $40, I'll more than likely go over to Best Buy, but I'd like some sort of knowledge of what I'm looking for. So far, these Zalman headphones look pretty nice, perhaps there are better, perhaps not, that's why I'm asking.

I'd recommend Sennheiser or Grado, like h3nG said. I got some Sennheiser buds myself, the top-of-the-line MX500, for less than $30. Any Sennheiser or Grado headphones should blow the socks off anything else out there.

If you need more opinions, head over to the Hydrogen Audio forums.

I got my Sennheiser PC-150's for $36 from Amazon.com. Best headset for under $100. If you don't want a mic, then go with the grados. Don't skimp on your headphones, if you do decide to skimp, never try on a better set and you'll never know what your missing.

For the under $40 price range, I'd recommend the Koss KSC-35s, which go for around $30 at Koss's site. If you like earbuds, then get the Sennheiser MX-400/500 (only difference is that MX-500 has in-line volume control). Don't be misled by their cheap price of about $15; they produce fantastic sound.

The other suggestions are also good if you want to spend more money. Can't go wrong with Sennheiser or Grado IMO, just depends on your musical tastes.

Check out Head-Fi Forums for tons of great information.

I second the PC-150's if you need a mic. Great set of headphones for the price.

I've heard people indicate the Koss' Portapro model (not the SportaPro) are some of the best portable headphones in existence. This is coming from people who use Grados and Senns in their home and who are no stranger to high quality cans.

I'm going to buy some of these myself at some point. They're really ugly too = free anti-theft feature.

Hahaha, I'm looking at these things. They really are ugly aren't they?

http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?topicID=3&subTopicID=26&productID=0020130045 (they aren't that expensive from what I've seen at Froogle).

Do you know how comfortable they are on the ears and how much noise they reduce from the outside world?

I'm reading a review of the HD 212 Pros right here and they seem pretty nice, but I may choose the Grados sr60 from what I've read.

By the way, I'd like the kind that covers your ears like the 3 I chose do (it's freaking 2:30am, please don't expect me to remember the exact words of things like that).

The other's that was shown to me that are ear-bud headphones look great, but not for what I want for when I want my surround sound on my comp to be put into headphones (although they'd be perfect for my lovely 1st gen iPod).

The KSC50s are supposedly the same as the KSC35, but not ugly, and the packaging for the KSC35 is better (bag and 1/4"->1/8" adapter vs. a twist tie). I like my KSC50. My next pair will likely be the KSC35, but until I can compare, I can definitely say the KSC50 are worth their $20 and then some, and they are touch enough for typical portable use, too.

Note that they do not reduce much background noise. Depending on your uses, this may be a fault or feature. For portable use, it's definitely a plus.
