Anyways I've heard advice both for and against going to the ER so far so now I'm not sure what to do.

And to the guy who said get admitted by the doctor, how does that work exactly? I didn't know that was a possibility.

Ummmm, those are perfectly good reasons to visit an ER.

Who wouldn't go to the ER for those reasons? Thats a pretty big emergency.

Edit: Try to pick a non city hospital. Go to a private hospital, but I guarantee you'll be waiting A LONG time.

If you think that this problem is bad enough that you are wasting away and to the point where you are considering going to an ER, then going to an ER will not get your tests done sooner. But asking your PCP to admit you might...if you are really that sick. Then you could get your workup as an inpatient. Your PCP telling you to go to the ER is a COP-OUT. It's just a way of passing a hot potato and letting someone else deal with it - someone who has no idea what has happened so far. That is the wrong way. If it's really bad enough that everything needs to be done now then your PCP can have you admitted directly to the hospital to get the workup done. That makes a lot more sense than him telling you to go to some random ER where they will have to start over from scratch.

Who is your current doctor/doctors office, I can do a search for you and see if I can't find you an urgent care clinic. They will be better equipped to deal with your needs.

I'm sure that you are in a lot of discomfort and are frustrated by the level of care you have received to deal with it. My suggestion would to also look for another doctor (I said this in the other thread as well) as your current doctor does not seem to be in tune with your needs.

Update: had to fly to my mom's house because I was too weak to stay alone in my apartment. Found a great GI specialist who first tried putting me on antibiotics for a week to rule out infections. He also gave me an IV to counter the dehydration I was experiencing, and did another CBC. My red blood cell count was 10, where 13 is the lowest normal value. White blood cells were high, and I still had constant low grade fever, albumen was also very low, indicating malnutrition. At that point I weighed 138lbs, down from my normal weight of 162 (with low body fat even at 162 since I work out a lot).

Antibiotics didn't work so we did a colonoscopy a week later. Got another emergency IV and was immediately put on prednisone. They could tell it was ulcerative colitis immediately, and the pathology results from the biopsies they took confirmed this a few days later. The prednisone has worked to reduce the inflamation. I no longer have to go 20+ times a day, I'm no longer losing water through diarrhea, and everything that comes out actually looks like poop, albeit small fluffy/raggedy pieces, and still go about 4-5 times a day. No more blood showing up there either, no more abdominal pain, and no more fever. I am eating a ton now, trying to regain weight and rebuild strength.

At the lowest point I was probably close to death. I haven't weighed 138 since 9th grade (and I was probably a few inches shorter at that time too). I looked like an AIDS patient. I was so weak I had to be in bed all day, and getting up to go to the bathroom would give me a head rush and sometimes my vision would black out completely and I had to hold on to a chair or doorway until that would pass.

I'm so glad that the worst has passed now and that the rest is now to find the least toxic medication that will put me into remission. The one I'm now is not something you want to be taking long term due to the side effects. the worst effects so far are insomnia (I just take benadryl to counter that for now), and the profuse sweating it causes whenever I fall asleep. I have to lay out 2 extra sets of clothes by my bed every night because I wake up every few hours completely drenched in sweat.

So basically, you have some chronic problem that your PCP is not man enough to handle and you think that somehow, magically, a busy, inner-city ER, staffed with people who have no training to handle these sort of problems, will sweep you away, get all $10K worth of your tests done in 15 minutes and give you your answer and cure. Wrong. If it is that bad, then your primary should ADMIT YOU HIMSELF to get tests expedited. If you go to the ER mark my words...you will wait for hours, appropriately, while real emergencies are triaged ahead of you. You will see an ER physician who does not treat and hence has little experience with chronic GI problems. You will get about $1K worth of repeat lab tests that you have already had (CBC, Chem-20). You will be discharged and told to follow up for your colonoscopy as planned. Net result - you are more frustrated, you pay more money, you get no answer, you waste a lot of time of people who have other, more appropriate things to be doing.

Trust me, I know how these things work. Do not go to an ER. Call your primary. Tell him/her that you are getting worse. If it's really that bad ask to be admitted for your testing. Things will work better and you will be happier. Hope this helps.

Don't most have fast track for ppl like him?
