best keyboard?

what is the best keyboard out there for under lets say 100 bucks... im using it at home for gaming, school, just basically an all round keybaord...

doesnt matter if it wireless or corded...

mouse also doesnt matter b/c this microsoft mouse is doing just fine.

Do you know how to touch type? No? Then get a straight one. If you can, and if you put in the bit of effort to get used to it, then DataDesk's SmartBoard is the best one in this price range. Available from sforh.com and ergocube.com ... datadesktech.com is its homebase.

The Logitech G15 is unparalleled for games IMO and is around $60 if you look around a bit. Although there are lots of sub-$20 keyboards that will do most things well.

i love the saitek eclipse. the key force is between that of a laptop and a standard keyboard, the feel of it is real nice and the back light is great when typing in a dark room.

Nah. I got a few of the best keyboards ever for free. With spare cords, too. new ones aren't badly priced, either.

I'd spend 20-30 on a high quality Logitech keyboard. I got my keyboard for free from a friend! Its noisy and old...stupid Dell keyboards! They are much better now. Heh, I guess that's what comes from me, especially because of the computer in my siggy

For general purpose, whatever keyboard feels best to you.

Any other answer has to make assumptions about your hands, your posture, your environment, your typing skill, etc.

It really is a very subjective choice. A keyboard could have the best build quality, the best feature set, and a great price, but if typing on it for more than an hour makes your hands feel like spiders beneath a wheel, it obviously isn't the best keyboard for you.

My advice, hit some computer superstores where you can test some keyboards. At the very least, you'll be able learn what key layout you prefer, what key throw distance, what feedback(click, etc.) you like. Then you can narrow your search down to keyboards that meet those criteria and one will probably obviously stand out.

Saitek eclipse for me easy.
If anything just for the delicious Vader styling and lights.
It's also comfortable and well designed.

The G15 imo is a waste of money, and too big aswell.

I would go for the Logitech G15. I bought one when it came out instead of a saitek because of the sweet macro keys (useful for a lot of things), media buttons (play, back, foward,..), the LCD (nice for music and some programs are out for it now, and more and more games are supported) and finally I liked the key illumination better. But it really depends on features you want and need.

The Logitec MX3000 Desktop works great for me. It is wireless. (Had a smigid trouble getting to work w/ XP Pro SP2) But if you work out the bugs it is the nicest keyboard i've used.

I just ordered a Deck Legend keyboard earlier tonight. It's supposed to be the shiznit keyboard... no gimmicky LCDs, macros, crazy key layouts, replaceable key templates, etc. No crappy, mushy key strokes from membrane-keyboards. Just an incredibly solid keboard frame, keys with incredible tactile throw, an awesome LED scheme, and lots of manufacturer support for user-created keyboard mods.

If you're willing to pay a mint for what I hear is the best gaming keyboard, then this is worth it.

I'd get two keyboards actually...

a microsoft ergo 4000 for typing, and a saitek for gaming. That's what I've been using, and it's great, and if you look, you can get both of them combined for less than $100

Yup, the MS ergo 4000 is what I use....all the time. I even prefer it for FPSs cause it conforms so well to the angle and orientation of the hand. Frag to your hearts content without fatigue to your WASD digits.

althought the ms ergo 4000 is not a true ergo keyboard it is what i find to be the most comfortable for typing but not for gaming.

Have you ever played WARCRAFT on an ms ergo 4000 it gets a long time to get accustomed too. Its hard to use hotkeys that are on the right side of the keyboard.

What do you mean by 'true ergo keyboard.' It seems to me as ergo as it gets.

If you are a big hotkey user then I could see where you might have an issue since the right side is quite apart from the left. In my case, the right hand is on the mouse and the left is WASD. I usually don't like to mess with hotkeys on the right side as they take too much time to hit and divert your view from the screen. I've really liked the ergo 4000 for FarCry, CoD2 and SiN.

The Datadesk Smartboard is about the only true ergo keyboard that has been mentioned in this thread. The other, while maybe having a split or wave layout, still have their keys in staggered rather than straight columns, forcing your fingers to make unnatural, unergonomic movements.

I've got an IBM clicky keyboard new in the box (original - AT plug). Some say it was the best ever made, to me it's just taking up space.
