So whats the best modern RPG, i have played fallout 3 and oblivion and like fallout but the level cap and story are hurting and oblivion has the most flawed leveling system i have seen in my life. Is there a game that has a HUGE map like oblivion but has a good leveling system? Should add i just built a PC a few days ago so i have not played any new titles since about 2003, old computer had a GF MX 400 My new rig should be able to handle anything.

Dragon Age once it releases. Seriously you have not missed much since 2003. The CRPG scene has been very stale outside of Mass Effect and The Witcher there has not been anything worth while IMHO.

Guild Wars is not a MMO. It is more like Diablo 2 except with a in game lobby and a arena system.

well that could be good also, diablo 2 rocks its really to bad they decided to wait WAY TO LONG to make diablo 3 i think even when D3 is out it will be beaten by other games that had a long time to get into the market and will be on there second or third game already also. That said so is guild wars a good game? i herd titans quest and sacred are good D2 type games, i might give them a shot.

Mass Effect or Knights of the Old Republic

Well, maybe not KOTOR but 5 planets to explore is plenty. Took me around 33 hours to beat my first time

Seriously.

If you like the gameplay style of D2, Titan's Quest and like to PvP from time to time then yes it is a good game. The world is very instanced. This means there are many zones which you need to go through "portals" to access. Most of the folks are located in towns which are also instanced. PvP is done via arena instances as well. If you want to get into the whole MMO thing then try WoW. It's good starter MMO IMHO and very polished. If you enjoy social networking, complex game mechanics and like space ships then try EVE Online.

I haven't played The Witcher yet so I don't know if it lives up to the hype. My top 6:

Star Wars KOTOR 1 & 2 (despite 2's ending)
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines
Mass Effect
Fallout 3
Oblivion

Diablo 2 is 10 years old and still superior to TQ and Sacred 2 which are relatively recent games. Heck, there's even a new content patch coming out for D2. I highly doubt Diablo 3 is going to have ANY serious competition, period.

unless they do something serious to prevent hacking diablo 3 will not be all that great IMO. Ive spent years of my life playing D2 but the hacking got out of control, i havent played in 5+ years though so i dont know if they have it under control now.

Failure, GW is the best MMO to date. An MMO where you don't grind, max level is acheived quickly, and success is acheived through skill, who could ask for more? It's the skill-based part of an FPS with the multiplayer-skill based part of MMOs.

This. And my favorite recent RPG is Sacred 2. Has some flaws, but it's a good game.

It's not a MMO. It is a CO-RPG title just like the Diablo series, Titan Quest, etc.. There is nothing Massively Multiplayer about GW to warrant it being a labeled as a MMORPG period.

1) GW is not an MMO
2) All that having a low max level does is make me less attached to my character.
3) EVERYBODY LOOKS THE SAME (of the same class, I mean)
4) GW requires no more skill than most MMOs. I have no clue why you think it does.

To the OP,

Titan Quest is the best D2 clone I've played. It makes a lot of improvements on gameplay, including more diverse classes and skillsets, comparison windows, and shared banking. However, the story is not nearly as interesting.

Mass Effect and KotOR are decent if you have no played them yet.

Next person to call GW an MMORPG needs to be slapped with the ban stick. Even the game's developers claim it is not an MMO.

There are good recommendations for RPGs in this thread, but I'd also add Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, plus their expansions. NWN1 can be had for dirt cheap these days and it boasts more content than the largest MMOs ever created to date.

Mass Effect, while a decent game with excellent product values, is severely hampered by its extremely short 8 hour finish time. The inventory system is garbage, there's no interparty dialog, the dialog selection process is subpar, all force it below Bioware's prior work.

Best Modern RPG: Oblivion. Hands down.

I'm going to need to state my case as most people have a love hate relationship with it.

At the time it was revolutionary. A very very beautiful immersive gameworld that is still considered very top quality visually even by today's standards.
It has a very good mod community which allows many improvements that some consider necessary to improve on the developers shortcomings.
Very good replay value, good story (not as good as KOTOR for sure) and tons of stuff to do.

This is true, its world is large, open, and extremely pretty. Doubly so when you mod it to actually take advantage of the PC's superior capabilities vs the consoles it was developed for.

No, it doesn't To date, I have seen a paltry handful of decent mods for Oblivion. Most simply add custom houses, or a half baked quest, or an uber-merchant. Only a few, such as some of the companion mods, offered any semblence of decency, story, or increased the value of the game beyond the 'gee-wiz' factor.

Oblivion's replay value was minimal. I think I invested about 20 hours or so into the game before everything became boring. The only thing its useful for these days is benchmarking, and its going to be eclipsed for that very soon.

Oblivion was not the best modern RPG. Honestly, that honor would probably go to The Witcher. The pickings have been very slim this last few years.

GW is nothing like Diablo or Titan Quest.
I cant even figure out why people would make such a comparison.

Also, Titan Quest is exactly like Diablo 2 in every way except its far superior.
Only nostalgic fanboys would say Diablo 2 is better.

I am not nostalgic. I am a GenX kid. I have no issue remembering bad things in my life. And I dont pretend things were better back in the good old days.
The only reason I like Baldurs Gate 2 and Deus Ex more than some current games is because they are better. If someone ever makes better games I will love them.
Incidentally, it looks like Dragon Age and Deus Ex 3 have potential.

Titan Quest is better.
Deal with it.

As for the OP's issue:
Oblivion and Fallout 3 are nice while you can get into them, but many folks get bored after a while and rush through the main quest. Once you do that there is no purpose to finishing all the dinky little side quests.
Mass Effect is good for just the main quests. The side quests are incredibly repetative and boring. Also, there is no point in playing it more than once. The character classes are not so different from each other that it makes the game more interesting. At least with KOTOR 1 and 2 it was fun to play once each as light side and dark side.

You've got to be kidding me. A paltry handful of good mods? When is the last time you looked?
I've spent almost 200 hours in Oblivion with all the mods that I've downloaded over the years that have added so much it's almost unbelievable.

Top 100 oblivion mods. Many of those are large multi-path quests like The Lost Spires, which was an excellent fully voiced 30 hour quest line. How about Daggerfall Memories, which adds an entire new island to explore complete with it's own quests? Take a look at some of those before you make such an ignorant statement. If you simply hate the game then that's another issue.
